If you're patient and work hard, you can get a mint copy for less than $10 (like I did :) ) by asking eBay and Amazon Marketplace sellers. There are still a bunch of these out there where the owners have no idea what they have.

"I know this might be a strange question to ask, but can you please check the little writing on the disc itself in the clear area in the center? Does it say "35DP-4" there?"

You also need to make sure it does not say "Now made in the USA" on the back, and make sure the cat # is CK 33453.

There might be some other differentiators, but those are a start. More here:

The matrix code is key. You don't need to check anything else if 35DP-4 is there.

Thanks for that. What I'll probably end of doing is dropping a couple of hundred on one - then If I ever do come across one on the cheap I can sell it and get my money back. Ever the optimist!!

It really is not worth $200 for the DP4. I find it very over-rated.

Spend $50 or so and get the Mastersound. Much better imho.

 well yeah, if you like a really sterile, digital and fairly loud presentation.

If you don't, then the 2 track is where it's at.imho

Good to have some feedback from the other side of the fence Lee!

Sometimes I remind myself that we have to be careful about the hype, and to read between the lines. I'm sure that part of the demand for this title is down to the rarity/age (first mastering and all that). Also that if more and more people pay lots of bucks for something, they may be more blinkered towards (cheaper) alternatives, thus perpetuating the air of mystery over the more expensive ones!

I dunno - I guess I'll I'll have to listen and decide for myself. Fortunately, both issues hold their values and I could sell on the one I prefer the least!

To the OP,maybe read about the Harvest mastering for a less expensive alternative.I`m not trying to say wich mastering is the best, another one to consider though.

I think the gold Mastersound is fabulous. I think the 2 track is possibly the best sounding CD I've ever heard. Of course there is the Jethro Tull Aqualung DCC, the Eagles Hotel California DCC, the McCartney Band On The Run DCC, Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees MoFi, the Stevie Wonder Innervisions MoFi, the Chicago Transit Authority Mastersound........................

No need to bad mouth either disc. While the 35DP-4 is my current favorite, Doug Sax's Mastersound has more and well defined bass. It is an excellent disc and depending on one's system it could even come out on top. FWIW, Steve H has stated the Mastersound is his favorite. Which surely means the Mastersound is not 'hard' or sterile or digital or "fairly" loud to him and it certainly isn't to me. I do not feel one disc dwarfs the other (or anything even close to that) and that comments to that effect in either direction to me represent the always "dreaded" hyperbole :)

Once again, for the record my current preference in the 35DP-4.

P.S. The 5 track Columbia is also an excellent sounding disc and for the little money it commands no one can go wrong with it - one of the best overall values in sound quality that you'll ever find on CD.

That's the one I have, Ricks - the one with "Now Made in the USA." I'm just in the process of updating my collection (I already have the Mofi Floyds - and am quite happy with these..... so don't even go there!!):shh:

Well it took found four years and a day, but I found a Japan for US two track in the bins. It sounds swell. I now own the common DADC 5 track, Denon Japan for US 5 track, the Japan for UK blackface and two track. I still like the blackface but need to get some quiet time to listen critically.

    Cheers, Michael

After hearing these two clips I went for a Harvest BF Japan for UK 1st Press CD. I hope they sound as fab as those two clips! I might be missing a trick but I plan on ripping them to iTunes as lossless and only hope they sound as good as the clips. I'll play them through my iPod via my FiiO E11 kilamanjaro amp and Audio Technica headphones.

I'd love to see the graphs that foobar2000 made for Wish You Were Here (the Dark Side Of The Moon graphs are still viewable). Is there a way to have them back? I see he's been offline for years... He claims there are basically 4 mastering on CD (5 if we consider also the 2011 Guthrie), but can't undestand how the different available masterings can be grouped.

He posted WYWH here too (somewhere). I have them cut and pasted into my Pink Floyd info spreadsheet.
