Scored this one by pure chance in Hogs Head in Edinburgh; just thought I'd bought the pre-remaster, but ended up with the black face Japanese version. Delighted with it; anything but muddy to my ears on first listen. Really rather impressed. Moreso for £6.99!

:agree: There certainly is. My matrix is CP32-5032 11A2 +++++

This one is now my preferred pressing for Meddle in case not everyone caught this yet.

is still the "black triangle" and mfsl are the best? or the new boxes sounds better?
what about the other floyd 1st japan CP's ??? are better than the new boxsets?

  7. I can't comment on the Black Triangle mastering, but I think the MFSL gold CD slaughters the 2011 mastering by Guthrie. Meddle might be the worst of the new masterings, at least in terms of showing improvement over prior versions. The new mastering loses a bit of sparkle and guitar tone. Meddle is one of the few albums where I recommend seeking out an older mastering, if one owns the Discovery box set.

I like the 90's Doug Sax mastered CD over the 2011 remaster and the Japan Black Faced CD. I never heard the MFSL.

I have the MFSL and Doug Sax versions - hard to imagine anything sounding better than the MoFi.

What makes the MFSL better than the Sax mastering?

I don't have Meddle on vinyl, but the MFSL CD is how I would imagine it sounds on vinyl - very warm and full without a bit of digital harshness. You can crank that baby up.

I like the Sax, but the MFSL, like many of the ones they got right, is just pure.

The Meddle I mentioned above is still the reference in my collection, but in all fairness I haven't heard the new box sets and highly doubt they will better the Jpn CP32 non-TO pressing.

So is the JPN for UK blackface Meddle the same mastering as the BT (a mirror case for DSOTM, in other words)?

Hi. A while back, I was forced to listen to several Japan-manufactured "Meddle" CD pressings from the mid-1980's with variations in the matrix. I noticed a difference in the sound quality on just about all of the variations. I was told that the order of my preference in the sound coincided with the chronology of manufacturing, meaning I liked the earlier pressing runs more than the later pressing runs. They all appeared to be the same mastering but the earlier ones tended to sound fresher than the later ones. I was also told that my first preference was the one with just the Japanese matrix. My second preference was the ones with both the Japanese matrix and the CDP number. My last preference was the ones with "TO" in the matrix. Apparently, my preference did not discriminate based on the label design or whether it was released in Japan, U.K. or U.S.

Overall, however, I thought they all sounded very nice.

Hi. My hubby is crazy  and makes me listen to various pressings of the same album REPEATEDLY. I find the music on "Meddle" a bit scary, unlike a couple of the other albums by Pink Floyd. I think I would like it more if it had more vocals or a beat that I can dance to. :wiggle:

Hmm. He is very lucky that you have such patience! And yes, that album definitely has a certain cold spookiness to it, a rather unique vibe.

so it seem YES, the best choices are:

japan black triangle or uk black face, both same mastering
    and
    MFSL

maybe a lot discussed but mfsl ultradisc vs ultradisc II on this? peak levels for both are:
    Track Peak Levels: 91.8 / 69.7 / 100 / 100 / 45.6 / 84.3
so yes maybe both are the same thing...

MFSL CD sounds really fine to me. Totally satisified. DSOTM and Atomic Heart Mother too. I really like most all MFSL CDs.

LP, original pressing, USA, sounds fine, excellent really. I like it.

LP, Japanese pressed, Yeah!! Perfect. Atomic Heart Mother too. And 'In the Court of the Crimson King' and 'Weasles Ripped My Flesh'. . But I'm partial to these specific JN LPs. (As well as many other JN LPs which I heard for the first time in Japan. Most JN LPs do sound wonderous...usually, but a few not like 'The Nightfly'.)

After reading in the forum about the Black Triangle Disc CP32-5032 Japan 1st pressing I searched and found this edition on Ebay, the price was high but my passion as a collector and my curiosity to listen to the sound of the disc took hold of me, I really tried to fight it and let it go ( I already have the 1994 uk "remastered" and the original Harvest CDP 7 made in Holland 1984) , I came back and left the computer a few times trying to fight the urge
but at the end of the struggle I just decided to surrender , I simply could almost hear the disk calls me to add him to my collection  , so I did !
I know my fiance will faint when he finds out :hide: but beyond that I can not wait to put the disk , turn up the volume and enjoy from a different listening experience with soft sound and lower EAC levels
