C'mon, Jimi's legacy is going to recede because we don't have the, let's say, unedited Winterland and BOG shows? As I outlined upthread many of those shows don't lend themselves to a complete release. The non-release of all 4 of Buddy's long call + response routines with the audience on Changes and the sitcom length We Got To Live Together isn't going to hurt Jimi's legacy. Ditto for the 10 min Winterland drum solos. I agree, EH hasn't done a good job of getting the multitracked shows out but even as a fanboy I recognize that releasing all the shows unedited isn't tenable.
The Doors put out a boxset that has one channel of the stereo mixes pasted over to both channels on nearly all of the video material. Not only did they not fix this but they refused to acknolwledge it was a mistake. They used the released version of Indian Summer as a bonus cut labled "original '66 vocal" on the 1st LP reissue. Then they used tracks taken directly from bootlegs and claimed they were from the Matrix masters.

The real difference is EH makes an effort to track down and purchase new Jimi audio/video while The Doors org has stated on their official site that they only offer royalties to tape owners. This is why we'll never get any of the dozen SB tapes of '67 shows.
John McDermott is in charge of all Jimi reissues and he is one of the most passionate and knowlegable Jimi fans on the planet.
I agree but keep in mind Jimi wouldn't want any of this stuff released.

I think the way Jimi's work has been treated is not quite as bad but similiar to Elvis's. The difference is in the amount of reissues. There is just a hodge-podge of releases with crappy overdubs and questionable picks of material.

Mr. McDermott may be in charge of working on the material but I bet he has no final word on what or how they are released. I wish he did, because I'm sure he would do much better than Janie does.

I don't think every note he did does need to be released but surely you don't like the way the BOG material has been done. A beautiful box could be done that would be the final word on that material. Instead it will be dribbled out in pieces to make every cent that can be made.

I also didn't say the Doors releases were perfect, if fact I said they don't always get it right, but they are better than the ones Janie give us.

Which box are you referring to? The 1997 "Box Set"? Perception? A VHS/DVD box?

Perception. The promo vids have mono 'mixes' of one channel of the stereo mix. I could write a book about the screw ups on the 1997 box.

I'm glad I never shelled out for Perception then. The Box Set, I fell for, but that sublime version of "Queen of the Highway" on it is great.

    Now back to Hendrix...

Agree with what Chris said about Mcdermott, he is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate fans, although his latest book could have had a bit more proof reading, there are quite a few errors in it. It is a fantastic book though. But as Reader said he wouldn't have final say about what is released and in what manner.

I hope that Janie will have Dagger put out the '69 Baltimore and the Denver '69 shows that she had streamed on EH's website in the past. She's had a few others streamed as well hasn't she? I seem to faintly recall a Texas show from some year?

I'm not holding my breath. I mean we're almost into our 3rd decade since the digital revolution and we're still waiting for a legit mono AYE reissue and mono 45 mixes of Purple Haze, Hey Joe and Stone Free that are properly mastered and sound good.. If no one has bothered to put out this essential stuff yet, why bother with anything else?

We'll probably see the pre Experience instrumentals like Fried Cola and Whoa-Hee digitally remastered before we see a mono AYE

I'm under the impression that AYE, ABAL & EL will be released as Legacy Editions within the framework of a box set that contains all three works together. That's what I got from the press release. I'm not ruling out that I read incorrectly.

I don't think Band Of Gypsys will ever be issued as a "Complete Concert Series" box set. There are so many contractural issues associated with the album "Band Of Gypsys" (e.g. album is released on Capitol, royalties go to Ed Chalpin), that those performances will be isolated to that album. The rest of the tracks recorded may be released however. Sort of a complete concert series except any stuff from the album Band Of Gypsys LOL. I guess that's what "Live At The Fillmore East" was, except cherry picked rather than complete.

    AYE, A:BAL, & EL

Jimi's legacy will always be the 1st three albums.
The rest is just icing on the cake!
Let's review the first three on ceedee:

    Polydor: JPN & WG 2 or 3 of each title (?) 84/85
    WB: pre=RE-1 non-no-nosied (Lee Herschberg) 1985
WB: RE-1 no-noised (Joe Gastwirt mastering under the supervision of Alan Douglas) 1988
WB: post RE-1's (same no-nosied masters)
MCA: two releases each title (Joe Gastwirt & George Marino mastered) 1997
EH/MCA: two releases AYE & one of other two (Eddie Kramer mastered) 1998 With a past like that, we're getting worse not better, what are our chances???
    ----------------------
    "therockman" made this list:

    1. Japanese Polydor P20P series.
    2. Japanese Polydor P33P series.
    3. West German Polydor.
    4. Early Canadian Warner Reprise.
    5. Early US Warner Reprise, before noise-reduction was added.
    6. 1993 Mankowitz remasters.
    6. Experience Hendrix remasters.

This is an interview with Janie from Guitarist Magazine. She goes into detail about a few upcoming releases.

Janie Hendrix also went on to detail forthcoming releases:

"First of all we will begin re-releasing the core albums but not as you know them right now. They'll have the same covers but they will be packaged differently in more of a Digipak, including a DVD and more content.

"Then we have an album that is as yet untitled; it's going to be various pieces of Jimi's songs from his early career in Paris until he passed away. It will go from 1966 to 1970; some songs are different versions – there's an amazing Bleeding Heart on there and there are other songs that you haven't heard; different covers of songs, plus a couple of gems of songs that have never been heard at all. That will be a single album that will be released around February 2010.

"Then of course we have The Royal Albert Hall, released next year. It's basically reality TV as we know it today; there's a camera crew, several people that followed Jimi, Mitch and Noel around in Europe and they did two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. You get to see what Jimi was really like! He's in his own environment, backstage, in his apartment, on trains, planes and automobiles, checking into hotels – living the life on the road that he did. That will come out later on next year."

This is set to be followed by a Jimi Hendrix Anthology project.

Let's see if Janie delivers the goods. The long moratorium on releasing previously unreleased material to stores and mainstream online dealers has caused a loss of commercial momentum that the Jimi Hendrix catalogue may never recover from, unless Janie lets the music start flowing prolificly again. I'm not counting on it.

"it's going to be various pieces of Jimi's songs from his early career in Paris until he passed away."

Okay, so maybe we'll have the performance of Wild Thing from 10/18/66 that should have been on the Purple box set with the other 2 songs recorded by French Radio. Fine, what else? "Various pieces of Jimi's songs" Nice, more edited stuff, more incomplete jams and stuff? This just sounds like another South Saturn Delta, which is only an okay compilation. I'd rather see some complete concert recordings or a specific studio session compilation than another patchwork album of various things thrown together. Ditto the holding my breath for RAH. The Jimi Anthology sounds interesting, if its actually done well. I hope it doesnt have another instrumental version "All Along The Watchtower" on there wasting space.

You mean "Angel" or "Little Wing", right? I've never heard an instrumental version of "All Along The Watchtower"

No, I mean the "All Along The Watchtower". You're right, its not an instrumental, I guess I misremembered. Though its not very much different from the released version. They could have put something else on there.

The mix of "All Along The Watchtower" was the London mix from the 4-track tape, before a subsequent 4-track to 8-track transfer & additional overdubbing in New York.

We have been over this before but the Charly RAH disc was at best a grey area release.
