I'll definitely check this out just to see the results of their collaboration. I'm usually pretty satisfied with their respective work, so I'm hoping for a gem on this one.

If Time Out of Mind had included "Girl from the Red River Shore" and "Mississippi" in the place of "Highlands" and "To Make You Feel Me Love," I just might rate it above Blood on the Tracks.

I purposely avoided Time Out of Mind after having the misfortune to sit thru "Highlands" once. Never again!

Here's hoping the NY/Lanois collaboration works out.

Darryl Johnson's melodious bass playing should be a perfect fit to Neil Young's melodious lead guitar and harmonica playing for some nice counter-melodies and -rhythms. Daniel Lanois on lap steel and omnichord should fit in there pretty well, too.

This could become a great piece of atmospheric artistry. But for now, let's listen to "Black Dub" first, shall we? When will that album be released?

    from the 4-way site:

Neil Young has finished up work on a new studio album with help from legendary producer Daniel Lanois. The currently untitled disc is set for release sometime this fall and according to Lanois, represents truly uncharted territory for the "Southern Man" rocker.

"We cut a couple of solo acoustic songs, but the rest is very electric. There's no band, but I got in there with my sonics. There's nothing else out there like it," Lanois tells Rolling Stone of the album.
The former U2 and Bob Dylan producer says that it was a surprise to hear from Young, and that the two have decided not only to record an album, but also shoot a documentary.

"He just called me out of the blue," Lanois says. "He said to me, 'I want to make an acoustic record. Will you film me and record me?' Apparently he saw some films I put on YouTube of my new band Black Dub and he really liked them."

In addition to his new studio set, Neil Young is also readying a new box set of archival recordings including at least three unreleased albums - 1975's Homegrown, 1977's Chrome Dreams and 1978's Oceanside-Countryside, as well as live recordings from his 1976 tour.

Pheeew! No Bobo in there, which means I won't have to throw all of my Neil Young records out of the window.

The Archives stuff is very welcome. I hope it comes out before it's my time.

No but Young is impatient... These other guys (Cromwell, Rosas) stay performance ready, the Horse doesn't... IMO, age and rust may have stabled the Horse for good.

That and Pancho Sampedro has a real good gig doing TV. Without him, The Horse is kind of out of action.

The new album sounds very promising to me.

could be great if the songwriting is up to snuff. I haven't heard a lot of memorable toons come down the pipe from Neil over the last few albums.

Musictap is reporting Le Noise for release on September 28th. This must be the new title for the album.

Seems odd - Daniel Lanois announced that 4 tracks from the album would be premiered in Toronto at the Nuit Blanche festival on October 2.

Le Noise / Lanois - I wonder if the Musictap thing is a red herring?

I wouldn't rule it out. It might also be unique humor on the part of Neil and Daniel as well. We'll find out as time goes on. I have to admit that I kind of looked at that title and started wondering about it.

I just took a look over at CD Universe and they are showing a pre-order for something called Hitchhiker. It has a release date of September 28th being shown over there. Could this be it? It's listed as a Reprise release.

It's Neil. Don't believe anything until you go into the store and can pick it up and buy it, or you get the shipping notice from the online store you buy it from. Seriously.

New Neil Young Album 'Le Noise' Announced*

This was posted on Facebook, seemingly by NY himself:

"“Le Noise” is complete. It is a solo record. Playbacks are happening now. Release date is September 28th. It will be available in Vinyl, CD and I tunes in the first edition, followed by Blu-Ray, and an APP for I-Phone and I-Pad a month or so later. The app will be free. It gives you an interactive album cover. Forgive my use of the word “album”. I am old school. When you buy the songs/movies from I- tunes they show up in your APP. Peace ny"

I'm excited to hear this. Is anyone else expecting a late period masterpiece? I reckon he has it in him :righton:

Sounds good to me. I might just get the download and then pickup the bluray down the road (assuming it really happens).

This is great news! Of course, Neil being Neil, anything could happen -- but I'm cautiously optimistic, not only for the new album, but for the video footage! Apparently Lanois filmed the entire recording of the album!
