I am not sure if this bit appeared in any of the NKC book biographies about CIRO'S.
So, Nat appeared at Ciro's night club off and on from 1948 through the mid-fifties.

    Index to L-O-V-E book

Dale's song/album index from the Stardust book was very helpful to me so I wanted to return the favor. Here is the index to the L-O-V-E book. As with Dale's, some titles are merely mentions. Now that I finished this, I'll focus on finishing the Trio spreadsheet that I posted earlier.

(The board strips away my columns when it posts, so my apologies for having the page numbers against the titles. I couldn't figure out how to separate them here.)

Coleman - thank you. Wow! As you know, I appreciate the work and effort that went into this song/album index to the L-O-V-E book from Bear Family. I will be using this shortly. And thanks again for your Trio spreadsheet.

You're very welcome, Dale. Yes, it was definitely a chore. The Trio spreadsheet is next on the list to complete. My goal is finish it over the next couple weeks.

Just picked up a NM/NM "Angels" LP off ebay for a total of $16! Considering that the last one I tried for went for over $50, I consider this to be an excellent deal! I am surprised, actually, that it went for as little as it did. Needless to say, I'm quite pleased. I think I'm down to fewer than 4 missing tracks.

Congrats. When I found one awhile back, I think I found it using the promotional record number - PRO 4303. I didn't even realize then that some considered the title to be based on the phrase used on the back cover -- "Where The Angels Gathered To Sing..."

That may have been why it sold for as little as it did. The seller did not list the record number. The copy that went for over $50 did have the number listed. I was alerted to this listing because it fit my search criteria for autographed Cole items.

Here is a short, 1967 article in Jet about the ball. I wonder where that gold copy is today. Does anyone know how many of these records were given out? It looks like the number of this copy is 366. Anyone have a higher number?

I have No. 313. I bought mine off ebay a few years back... but I can't recall how much I paid. I don't think I would have spent more than $20, though. Mine was still in the shrinkwrap. (And I was amazed they bothered to shrinkwrap these, as they back covers had to be autographed first...)

I received the new Mosaic box set of Jimmie Lunceford today. Nat King Cole liked Jimmie Lunceford's band. In Part 1 or 2, I quoted an interview with Nat in a British magazine where he was praising their swing.

In the booklet is a photo from the Dave Dexter Collection of Nat, Jimmie, and Lena Horne at a Jubilee broadcast.

I looked at coleman's NAT ON RADIO list and found the Jubilee radio program of June 26, 1944 that has Lunceford and Cole. But, I also found another Jubilee show from July 24, 1944 with Lunceford, Cole and Lena Horne.

A podcast of the June 26, 1944 Jubilee show is linked below. I thought there was slightly better sound if you click on the DOWNLOAD link which is Quicktime. However don't expect great sound.

Three more podcasts that include Cole are listed on this page:

    http://retro-otr.com/category/music/jubilee/feed/

Evidently they are these three from coleman's list:

43/10/04 -- Jubilee #45 - Guests Erskine Hawkins, Nat King Cole, (Nat sings "Slender, Tender and Tall"), 30 min.
43/11/08 -- Jubliee - Guests: Louis Jordan, Nat King Cole
44/02/14 -- Jubilee - Guests: Cab Calloway, Nat King Cole

I haven't listened to all of them. Be forewarned that the Cab Calloway podcast is running at the wrong speed -- slow -- and that the sound is pretty bad. I could only listen to about two minutes... yikes

Thanks, Dale. I'll have the list updated by the end of next week. The overall format needs a little rework, too. When I finish the Trio spreadsheet, I'll work on giving the Radio and TV list a similar treatment.

Dale, thanks for the links. I noticed that what we have as the 43/10/04 show is listed as 43/09/20. I added the other date there, but am wondering which is correct. I listened to the first couple minutes of the show, but no date was mentioned.

    Short answer:
I would go with the October 4, 1943 date (the dubbing date for the show) as given in the Jubilee discography. I don't know where this radio podcast came up with the September date of the 20th.

    Long answer:
Trying to figure out dates on Jubilee radio broadcasts discs sort of opens up a whole can of worms. There were often several dates involved for one show:

    • Pre-recording dates -- sometimes Nat (and others) pre-recorded his segment for inclusion on a Jubilee broadcast disc.
    • Dubbing dates -- In most cases this date is as official as it is going to get, because the dubbing date was often noted on the disc.

    • Initial broadcast dates varied all over the world, depending on where the troops were.

Then to make this King Cole Trio Jubilee recording of "Slender, Tender and Tall" more confusing :nyah:, it was used on two different Jubilee broadcast discs. Jubilee # 29 for June 14, 1943 (dubbing date) and Jubilee # 45 for October 4, 1943 (dubbing date).

Teubig's book lists Nat's recording date for this song as June 14, 1943.

Did a little more research on this. Seems tickets to the ball were sold through Capitol and went for $25, $50, and $100. That's $166, $333, and $666 in 2011. The records were sold separately. 1,500 records were pressed. The framed, gold master was auctioned and won by Steve Allen for $950/$6,329 (1967/2011). Lee Gillette personally chose the tracks for the album.

Frank DeVol, Nelson Riddle, and Ralph Carmichael worked on the overture for the evening, with Nelson Riddle performing with a 16 piece orchestra and Wayne Newton on vocals.

I got my copy in the mail yesterday. #344. Record is in as close to mint as possible and still has the plastic wrap on it. Interesting that Maria Cole signed "Mrs. Nat King Cole" and did her best to copy his signature.

So much for the 1,500 quote. 1,600 perhaps? I wasn't able to find out for how much they sold.

In case anyone does not have this or wants a backup copy, one is now available on ebay. Four days left and the current price is $15. It's listed without the title or the record number, so it should go fairly cheaply. Listing is here. Record is stamped #1260.
