Moody Blues SACD's on spincds.com

That high fidelity review story is pretty sloppy. They even indicate "Lost Chord" as being quad.

 

So no word about these being released domestically in the US?? If not, it's beyond stupid. Fans of the Moody Blues have been salivating over these for years! They'll already have them by the time Universal (or whoever) gets off their collective rear-ends.

Does anyone have an insider info to confirm that these are really SACDs?? I want to pre-order them but I really don't want to pay upwards of $20 per set for redbook remasters... especially since if they are regular redbook CDs, they will almost have to be released here in the US.

Are we talking the 1973 remix or the 1978 remix that has the differences?

 

There are only two remixes: the quad, and the stereo. I've never heard of another 'remix.' As for the original stereo mixdown tape, it may be beyond salvaging, but decent copies most certainly exist. We've gone over the mix differences in the Moody Appreciation Thread, there are simply too many to list, the sonics are night and day. Whatever you prefer is fine, I just dig the original because it's what I grew up with.

I read an older thread (2003?) about Days of Future Passed and it talked about the 1973 remix and the 1978 remix. I have read about the differences between the 1978 remix and the original stereo mix, which are many. The 1973 remix--or so the thread said--was mixed to sound less "rock" and appeal to the classical audience. I understand that the 1978 remix formed the basis for all the CD releases. However, I am wondering exactly what the 1973 remix was.

 

1973 would be about the time the quad mix was made...still not sure which came first, but the quad was issued first, that much seems certain. Didn't come across the stereo remix until several years later.

 

I think the quad mix is the one they're referring to as the "first remix".
What about the "This Is The Moody Blues" remixes?

 

Presumably, most are special mixes made for that album("Question" suggests this is so). Whether more than what's on that 2-Lp set was remixed to stereo(but left in the can)I've no idea. However, the interesting mystery is if anything from LOST CHORD was remixed. I don't hear anything special going on, and have never been certain which tracks were missing enough parts that they couldn't remix to quad for that one.

 

The "Lost Chord" tracks ARE remixed on "This Is".

There are differences in the vocal mix on "Legend Of A Mind" in particular.

 

Who has the cheapest prices on the new SACDs? I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to buy from the UK (depending on the shipping cost) since it seems like the prices are a lot lower (with 1 GBP = $1.74). CD Universe has the price up to $35 for some titles!

 

I pre-ordered from amazon.co.uk. Their prices seem to work out the lowest when everything is factored in.

For European buyers, www.play.com looks pretty good, no mention of them being SACD but the release dates seem to be right.

 

I've ordered from them before when I couldn't find a CD anywhere else - it only took about a week.

 

These will probably show up as "domestic" releases through UMG here in Canada.

 

It would be great if they did. I just hope we don't have to wait too long for that.
About remixes, it's possible that all of the remixing of the catalog took place in and around 1973 including the quads and stereo DOFP and all of the stereo tracks for TITMB. I got used to the stereo remix of DOFP because it's what I heard first. But you're right Ed; the original stereo mix has a lot going for it most notably smoother segues.

I'm not going to feel bad about paying $30 for these now, unless they sound bad.

 

This still begs the question--"original" stereo mix for DOFP, or the remix? What if the main tracks are the original stereo mixes and the "alternate mix" tracks are the 1978 remix versions?

Weren't Tuesday Afternoon and Nights in White Satin on the Time Traveler box set the original mixes?
