  1. After pre-ordering this set, I thought I'd look to see what other Rhino Handmade 3 CD Monkees sets are out there. Of course I saw BB&tM but was suprised to see the OOP 3 CD Headquarters Sessions advertised on eBay and Amazon for anywhere from $200 - $500! Wow! Does it really trade hands for these prices?

Love the "Mike leaving the group cover"! Brilliant.

I think we can all agree that you made the right decision. Thanks!
Given that the concert was given for the movie, it's too bad that it wasn't better recorded. Regardless, it's a highlight of the set for me.

Some information for my Canadian friends: I went ahead and ordered the set, paying the $10.51 for "international" postage. Then I wrote to them. I explained that the screen had said that I had received free shipping, only to then add $10.51 at the very end. I asked them if this was because I was Canadian or was it an error. This is the response I received:

This is a website error. If you email or call us once your order is shipped, we'll refund your shipping charges. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you for contacting Rhino.com Customer Service.

We have forwarded your shipment issue to our order support team for review. We will update on any progress within 2 business days.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Can you offer up any more info about the Phoenix 4 track that was just located? I haven't read anything about it (or any new Monkee finds) here on the board.

    Thanx!

Thanks for sharing that with us, jrice. I ordered a copy earlier today and went with the standard shipping rate. I will definitely contact Rhino and see if they'll refund my shipping charge as well.

The 'value' of stuff never ceases to amaze me. I would be surprised if sets really sold for that much. IMO, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. That would be a little steep for me especially since (I think) that set is available on ITunes. (correct me if I'm wrong)

When Headquarters Sessions was first released, I was woefully poor and unable to buy it at the original price. Fast forward to 2004 when I finally had some discretionary money again. I was very unhappy to learn that Rhino had no more sets available. I went for the very first time to Ebay to see what I could find. I got into a bidding war with one other person when one was put up for auction. I gladly paid $175...well, I would have been "gladder" to have paid less, but nobody twisted my arm on what my maximum bid was. I guess you could say I'm a fool when it comes to The Monkees. Always have been, always will be. Maybe you can get it on iTunes. I'm not sure. I'd rather have the physical product in my hand to admire and display. That's just my preference.

Here's a nice shot of Peter with his banjo from the Salt Lake show that we'll finally get to hear him play on You Told Me.

Thanks Andrew for choosing to include the live tracks on this set. They are probably the biggest selling feature for most fans interested in getting this Head deluxe edition.

Andrew, I was wondering where you located the rough acetate mix of Long Title that is on disc two of the Head box?

Has any of Peter's tapes surfaced recently or since you published your Monkees Day-by-Day book that you are aware of?

It was obviously a tape in the hands of a (star) collector. A 4 track tape transferred back in the 80's on a 2 track tape machine. Thusly, the vocals are missing. Recently transferred on a proper deck and it's been revealed that some of the vocals are present. The tape/cd of the Phoenix show that's been trading hands is that very inferior tape. Listening to the Rhino/Andrew interview with Mike, it's apparent that a better source tape has been located because "She So Far Out She's In" sounds pretty dang good! That's all I gots, man. Peeps just need to fit the puzzle pieces together. It's no mystery.

I've been listening to the samples and thought I would share some random thoughts on some of them:

    - I'm assumimg that the alt stereo mix of Long Title is the same one that's featured on disc one of the BBM set. At the end of the sample you can hear Davy's background vocals. Also in the track listing featured in the press release, there isn't a * beside it indicating that this has been previously unreleased.

    - Micky's vocal on Porpoise Song(rough mono mix) is more prominent and not as laden with echo. It sounds great to my ears.

    - The Ditty Diego that wraps up disc one will presumably contain excerpts from take two of the sessions where the boys recite it in unison. It's nice to have more of this material come to light, particularly since it would be the last time all four would be in a studio together until the Justus sessions. I really enjoyed the rapport between Nicholson and the guys on the outtake featured on the Rhino Head cd from the '90's.

-Happy Birthday To You sounds like Beach Boys Smiley Smile era harmonies. Great to have the opportunity to hear an alt mix of this one.

-Circle Sky (alt mono mix) Nesmith really sounds raw on this one. He really belts out the YES in the line /yes it looks like we made it once again.

I should really great to bed now, but the anticipation for this release has had me up late the last couple of nights pouring over all things HEAD!

The best part of the compromise is that we do get "You Told Me", which is the rarest track on that concert's setlist (aside from Cuddly Toy, which is at least circulating on the Japan concert tape).

Peter has a beard in this photo, so most likely it was taken during the Monkees 1968 Australian tour. The young lady may be a local Australian celebrity.

This shot was taken in California during one of the many parties for Head. I want to say San Francisco, but I might be off on that. However, it is Carol Doda. A series of negatives from this 'photo op' popped up on ebay about a year ago.

I believe that you are correct that these images are from San Francisco as the negatives came from a San Francisco newspaper. I didn't win them but I certainly tried to.

The Bay Area would be correct concerning Doda. She used to be featured in promo ads for Channel 36 down there. They'd put a photo up of her and saying the station was "the perfect 36".
