53 DVD: Miles Davis in Schweden 1967

At first sight, what's really new is:

    - Isle of Wight (1970)

Previously avaialbly on a french CBS LP, then quickly withdrawn. The concert has recently been released on a DVD, with lot's of documentary material.

    - We want Miles + 3 bonus tracks (1981)

    (the bonus tracks?)

    - DVD Miles Davis in Schweden 1967

I think that was already available on bootleg DVDs.

This set seems to include only the official albums, and is missing all the additional tracks from the box sets. So it's rather something for a Miles fan who want to have the original albums in addition to the chronolocal box sets.

Anyway, the price is extremely low (170€, about $3 per disc), so I expect the packaging to be rather minimalistic.
To be released on October 26

yes but artist royalties and publishing rates are more expensive for miles.

this release does not come in a trumpet case. the trumpet case is for a complete re-release of all the metal box sets.

If this is less than $200 then it may be a good purchase for me, seeing as I only have 17 of the 54 releases, and $5 a disc isn't bad. I'll want to know whether Agharta and Pangaea are remastered, though. That would be nice.

I hate to be a dope. Please no flames. But is the Blu-Ray thing in terms of video only? If not what does Blu-Ray do for audio. I have not been following the Blu-Ray tech.

Libraries, schools, etc. Plus a few collectors and investors. Internationally, it could probably justify a short run. And they'll have everything digitized for use whenever they choose to.

Essentially, they are cutting the CDs with a blue laser normally used to make Blu Ray discs. CDs usually are made with a red laser. According to Sony, the blue laser makes more precise pits in the disc, leading to less errors and therefore a more accurate sound.

Unfortunately, they usually remaster the audio too, so it's hard to perform an A/B comparison. Perhaps someone here can correct me on that?

That sounds very complete.:D (even at only 71 discs, wow!)

  15. Sweet!

    Oh wait, wrong thread.....

Cool! But are these all new remasters? I'm not too keen on Sony releases, although maybe they will treat jazz better than they treat pop and rock music. I imagine this set will weigh a ton but not as bad as it would have if the discs came in cases instead of card sleeves :D

I'll wait for the reviews from the Hoffman board members (if any of you get it) and then if it's good, I'll save for it and grab it

    250 page book

During his tenure at Columbia Records, Miles Davis recorded an awe-inspiring 52 albums. Pretty soon, you'll be able to own all of them in one gigantic box that will probably be heavy enough to kill someone.

On November 10, Columbia/Legacy will release The Complete Columbia Album Collection. The box will include (seriously) 70 CDs and one DVD, and somehow it's that one DVD that makes the whole thing look like overkill.

The DVD is Live in Europe '67, which will be on DVD for the first time ever with this set. The set will also include a previously unreleased live recording of Davis's performance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.

According to Legacy, the CDs will all come in "Japanese-styled mini LP jackets", which sounds cool. The CDs will include bonus tracks that have been tacked on to Davis reissues over the years. There will also be a 250-page book.

The whole massive brick of a thing will be available exclusively from Amazon, and it'll run you $369.98, which is kind of a bargain. That's about five bucks a disc!

Is there a pre-order on Amazon yet? I could not find it.

If it's under $300, I will probably pick it up even though I have all of the metal spine sets and a few other various releases.

What's unreleased from Isle of Wight? Isn't the Murray Lerner footage in Miles Electric the complete performance?

Has anyone noticed that the track list provided in the post above is for a different set of discs than what's advertised on Amazon in France? The difference being about 20 discs.

Still in all, this looks like what I expected. Something similar to the Glenn Gould box with the discs selling in the range of @$5. It's a good price if you don't have them, but there doesn't seem to be anything revelatory that hasn't been issued before.

I won't be purchasing this as I already have most everything including the Sony/Legacy box sets in the metal spine but this does sound like a great package and would be very cool for anyone looking to acquire Miles' Columbia discography in one fell swoop.

Many, if not most, of these albums have newer, superior (in most cases, to my ears) Japanese remasters as opposed to what's available in the US. I will be interested to see whether this is just a ploy to clear out the extant US CDs or whether they are actually doing these from the latest masterings.

Not all, but it seems the last few round of JP reissues have been DSD.

Losin has a list of Mastersound reissues.
