There is a link in the video's description to a lengthy write-up about that night, and apparently, the guy already has gotten his autograph numerous times.

I get the whole "I need to meet with my family thing" from Nesmith. It's fair.

I also get people want autographs and waited outside for just the hope of even a handshake or a glimpse of Mike.

What I don't get is Mr. Saint Louis. So f'ing what if you went to CA all the way from St. Louis. Your ticket promised you admission to a show. Not an autograph. Not a drink with Mike. Not dinner. Nothing else. It didn't even promise you'd have a great time or that you'd enjoy the music that was about to come from Mike. The ticket promised you a seat and that's it.

You can't give Mike a hard time for wanting to bail.

We can give Mike a hard time for other things like "scheduling conflicts" when Monkees tours come up or his walking out on the 1997 US tour after he just did an entire leg and album with them that spring.

Wiseblood already pointed it out, but yeah - it does seem like Nez says that he's got to meet his family, not fans.

I have no sympathy for old fat guys carrying their weight in memorabilia to get signed after a show. Even less for those who whine about it.

So what? Nez met fans inside the venue after the show. If he signed one of the albums then it would have been the poor guy just wanted THREE signatures. or if he signed all three, it would have been, he didn't talk to me! he just stormed off! Have to side with Nez on this one, sorry.

At a Monkees show in 2001, as I was being shown to the backstage area, there was a throng of fans who seemed to still believe that Davy was cute and that Peter was the loveable dummy from the TV show...you know what I mean? They eye-balled me with hatred (at least it felt that way) as I calmly dipped under the rope line and moved to the door. They were standing there clamoring, near tears...some in tears. It was a very odd thing. I just happened to be fortunate enough to be given a backstage pass that evening, and would have went home happy if I hadn't. The show was great. I almost felt awkward being backstage. (I was fortunate enough to get a few pictures.)

But yeah, the St. Louis guy at the Nez show reminds me of that throng of ladies who were PISSED they weren't being given admittance.

I wouldn't want to meet a gaggle of Monkees fans either.

Especially men in their 40's or 50s, all google eyed and yelling at you.. In fact, inside during the show, there was one guy (could have been this St Louis guy, in fact I belive it was) sitting in the row behind me, just a coulple of seats to my right... When Mike first came out, this guy let out a very loud "Hey Michael!!!!!!" I mean. very loud.. Ok, that was fine, we were all very happy and gave Nez a very, very warm welcome, so I can understand that.. Then, as Nez played, this guy let out a very, very LOUD, "I LOVE YA MICHAEL!!!"....."I LOVE YA, MIKE'!!!!! Nez did look seemingly uncomfortable I thought, at that point, but he continued on..

So now, flash forward to him leaving Largo, through the back door, into a small, dark ally, only to be facing and listening to a GROUP of portly men in their 40's - 50s hassling him for an autograpgh, and this one dude practically getting in his face with a the plea : "come'on Mike, please, I came all the way from St Luis, pleeeeasee.. Gee Mike.. ect" and whatever else he cried to him as he was trying to get into the car, and exit away from them..

I was happy to see Flanny and his guys from Largo, helping to escort Nez and his people safely to their car too..

I think I would RAN to the car, if it would have been me..

    LMAO!:D

I haven't seen that clip of the maniac fan hounding Mike. I'm scared to because stuff like that makes me cringe, and gives us "normal" fans a bad name. Personally, I would have been super happy just to have seen Mike in concert. Would I have wanted to meet Mr. Nesmith? Of course. But not under the circumstances like that St. Louis guy tried to. The Monkees are people just like you and me. They deserve to be treated with respect and consideration.

A bit off topic, but I saw Neil Innes recently. The guy in front of me had every Bonzo cd cover plus some photos and his own little pen to write with. It was annoying to me because he kept shaking the pen during our entire time in line. Then he got up to Innes and Innes obliged to sign and use his pen. When the pen completely shot out a giant glob of ink on one of the covers I felt content with the situation.

You really haven't followed his career very closely if you think he hasn't done anything of note for the past 30 years. He was only the first major music artist to win a Grammy Award for Music Video with 'Elephant Parts' in 1981, produced and starred in the NBC series 'Television Parts' in 1985, was a film producer for several films like 'Time Rider', 'Repo Men', 'Square Dance', 'Tape Heads' and produced several music videos for Kim Carnes, Survivor, Juice Newton and Lionel Ritchie. He reunited with the Monkees on several occasions in 1986, 1989 and 96/97', recorded several solo albums and embarked on a critically well-received solo tour in 1991, all this while being the CEO of his media company Pacific Arts. Nesmith may not have been on the radar of the general public and casual fans, but he has been quite busy over the past 30 years plus.

Here's a direct link to the blog written by the person who shot the video of Nesmith leaving the Largo gig.

    http://www.4tvs.com/Journey/2011/entries/J1165-082011.html

A few things stand out in his writing about his experiences with the concert. One, the Largo was VERY strict about their 'No Photos/No Video' policy, and took great measures to insure the rules were adhered to. Also, the guy who shot the video comes across as pretty obnoxious and very contemptuous of the fan begging for Nesmith's autograph and purposely filmed the fan's humiliating behavior. Reading his account, I don't think the guy who shot the video realizes what a jerk he comes across as.

Mike was respectful leaving, unlike Mr. St. Louis who looked creepy.

If I was Mike, I wouldn't tour with the Monkees. Multiply Mr. St. Louis by several people.

Why do I always find out about Nez shows after the fact? Can't he do just one freaking normal concert at a decent sized venue so I can pay big bucks for a good seat at stubhub?

I agree. He also notes how 'weird' the crowd is but adds to it himself. Just watching the video seems kind of spooky.

You have to wonder if Nez thinks of John Lennon and the Dakota when he sees fans like this? :sigh:

If he signed inside, then I retract my negative remarks :righton:

Artists like Nesmith come around so infrequently, that's difficult to contain the enthusiam of the fans. I recall a time when I saw Ray Davies at an outdoor arts, beats & eats festival in Detroit. He played an incredible set, after which we hung around, mostly waiting for the crowd to clear.

When a couple dozen folks gathered to wait for his departure, we decided to stick around. He came out and shook hands and provided autographs. My brother nabbed a setlist blowing around on the ground, which he gladly signed. He flipped me a guitar pick when we chatted about the vintage guitars he brought out at to the show. A cool experience.

Reading this guy's blog reminds me of the question posed by a wise man, "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?"
