Nice save. "I said something silly, but since 'I really don't care,' it doesn't matter that I did."

"Beatles-related" has nothing to do with it. The next time someone makes an ill-informed statement about an artist you care for, I'm sure you'll just let it slide without comment, right?

How so? What "thing" is "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" about? And what part of the lyrics make this a "love song"?

I would probably say it in a less condescending/acrimonious way, especially since the original "statement" was obviously a jokey comment (and essentially an opinion unless one was there when he named the song).

Regardless of the title, are you of the opinion that this song is NOT an ode to acid?

No personal acrimony was intended. But you don't find "suuuurrre it's about your kid's drawing or whatever..." to be just a wee bit "condescending" towards those who happen to have bothered to inform themselves rather than go the obvious route?

Opinions are fine...but there are informed, and then there are uninformed ones. I've been hearing the latter for years now, and I guess it just gets a little wearying after awhile. Sorry.

I'm of the opinion that John Lennon took LSD in this time frame and that it no doubt had a considerable influence on the lyrics and feel of this song.

But "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" is also informed by a general sense of child-like wonder and fantastic imagery...the sort of thing Lennon would have acquired via his youthful fascination with Alice in Wonderland and similar literature.

LSD was very handy for bringing that quality out in Lennon (and a great number of his contemporaries) after it had probably lain dormant for several years. But it's not an absolute prerequisite for this experience.

So no, I don't find "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" to be an "ode to acid" (i.e., "Wonderful, wonderful LSD...I love it...you should all go out and take some too"), much less a "love song" to it.

It's just a neat song that takes you to another place, as the best psychedelic songs do. I've never taken acid in my life, but I've still gone there.

  4. "Sexy Eiffel Tower" - Bow Wow Wow: horny nymphette gets turned on by Paris landmark. Not quite a love song, but close enough for rock 'n' roll!

Guys, guys, guys, settle down! Please don't turn this harmless thread into a Beatles argument. It's almost Valentine's Day, where's the love?

My good man, I reject your "on the contrary", because I agree with everything you just said. In fact, DWB has been my favorite BW ballad since the day it was released, and is still the ONE Brian / Beach Boys song I would take to the desert island. Achingly beautiful music and lyrics.

However, I've always found the "race car as plot element" a tiny bit muddled and contrived, enough to qualify it for inclusion in this illustrious thread. But that's just nitpicking. And I could be wrong.

    Cheers, etc.

    "Popsicle" by Jan & Dean.

"The Tennessee Stud" by Doc Watson.

    "My Ding-a-Ling" by Chuck Berry.

It has been suggested that "Joanne" by Michael Nesmith is a love song to a cow.

    Neil Young: Old King

    King went a-runnin' after deer
    Wasn't scared of jumpin'
off the truck in high gear
    King went a-sniffin'
    and he would go
Was the best old hound dog
    I ever did know.

I had a dog and his name was King
I told the dog about everything
There in my truck the dog and I
Then one day the King up and died.

    Then I thought about
    the times we had
    Once when I kicked him
    when he was bad
Old King sure meant a lot to me
But that hound dog is history.

    King went a-runnin' after deer
    Wasn't scared of jumpin'
off the truck in high gear
    King went a-sniffin'
    and he would go
Was the best old hound dog
    I ever did know.

That old King was a friend of mine
    Never knew a dog
    that was half as fine
I may find one, you never do know
'Cause I still got a long way to go.

I had a dog and his name was King
I told the dog about everything
Old King sure meant a lot to me
But that hound dog is history.

    King went a-howlin' after deer
    Wasn't scared of jumpin'
off the truck in high gear
    King went a-sniffin'
    and he would go
Was the best old hound dog
    I ever did know.

  19. At the other end of the spectrum is Jan & Dean's "My Dragstrip Girl", ostensibly about a girl but she is only appreciated because she keeps the dragster running good.

It could be said that Chuck Berry's "My Ding A Ling" is a love song to a person. . . himself.
