Personally, I'm all for the rich and especially the super rich paying a large percentage of tax. However 95% is extreme. I do have some sympathy with George, having to pay such an extortionate amount.
I swing back and forth, preferring "Yes It Is" one year and "This Boy" the next. They are cut from the same cloth and each has amazing moments. The YIS harmonies are a little sour, not sure it was on purpose. And both recordings are darker (at least in in stereo) than the usual Beatles sound.
I kind of agree here; he’ll sort of just start playing whatever happens to come. If, in the process, he sees that it’s forming into a specific direction (stylistically), he at that point begins to consciously build on that.
There are definitely songs they do that I will rarely listen to or care much about but I can't name a single song of theirs that I take a true disliking to. Hell even things that might technically not count like the film score pieces off the original Yellow Submarine soundtrack have their place in the band's history. Sure you have stuff like "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" that the band themselves (except for Paul of course) vehemently detested, but even I can appreciate them occasionally.
You Gave Me The Answer and Baby's Request are two of my favorites by him. That style isn't really the deep dark ages. It was still popular when he was growing up and people continue to perform songs from the Great American Songbook, for example. Those types of songs seem to irritate people who only listen to rock music. Just about everyone else enjoys them. He recorded an entire album of standards and so did Ringo. They like more than just rock.
When I'm Sixty Four I don't have many complete blind spots when it comes to music but I can't be doing with 60s pastiches of Victoriana and Music Hall unless Ray Davies is involved.
Here, There and Everywhere. A horrible song. It doesn't rock. Lennon must have been embarrassed by this one. I'm joking. "I'm often asked what my favourite song I've ever written is, and I don't ever really want to answer it, but if pushed I would go to 'Here, There and Everywhere,'" McCartney said, going on compare the flow of its lyrics to "Cheek to Cheek". Irving Berlin isn't a personal favorite but...
It’s too bad when someone disregards a song from the get go based on its style. Admittedly, I did that in the seventies as a young, know-it-all music fan. As I got older, my mind relaxed to the fact that just because it didn’t fall into my personal, sacred “musical norm”, it didn’t mean it wasn’t good (or great, for that matter).
Only in two or three little places. My only issue with the song is the slow-down that takes place in the second half.
Bottom 10 Beatles for Me in no particular order. Regular Releases (not including Revolution 9 or the German Single) Tell Me What You See You Like Me Too Much Run For Your Life Long Long Long I'll Get You Roll Over Beethoven Blue Jay Way Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby Dig It Maggie Mae
That’s a pretty fair minded list, I think. The only one I could never agree on is I’ll Get You. For me, that 45 is a solid double A-side all the way.
I mostly agree these songs are amongst the worst Beatles songs. However, we're not meant to be including covers, and if we did I'd pick a lot more of them. I certainly wouldn't pick Roll Over Beethoven, it's great! As for the originals, Long Long, Long is absolutely magnificent imo. Plus I really like I'll Get You. In some ways, it's a forerunner to Imagine. "Imagine I'm in love with you..."
I think the covers that I’d consider as contenders for worst are A Taste of Honey, Devil in Her Heart and Lizzy. Beethoven would definitely not be in there.
The only Ringo sung Beatle song I always kind of disliked (I wouldn’t say “hated”) is Matchbox. Now…the other day I picked up the Capitol 45 b/w Slow Down (I now have all the original Capitols, I’m happy to say)and I couldn’t get over how Matchbox truly rocked (and I hate that word!). My opinion has changed on it. Not a great song but a fun recording.
Some of the worst Beatles songs are covers imo. I dislike: Boys Matchbox Honey Don't Act Naturally Can you spot the common denominator? However, I also dislike: Till There Was You Mr Moonlight Everybody's Trying to be My Baby Bad Boy Dizzy Miss Lizzy. Strangely, I have no problem with A Taste of Honey or Devil in Her Heart.
