Both albums are currently being handled by Universal Music outside the U.S.

I've just read through the thread and didn't see any mention of it (I apologize if I missed it), but does anyone know if they're going to be using the same mastering versions as they did with the last big reissue campaign? If so, what would be the real benefit of buying these deluxe editions? The bonus material looks similar to the previous re-issues and the BBC tracks are available on the Kinks BBC CD. Thanks.

VGPS has already been repackaged in line with the other Universal 'Deluxe Editions', so there is no reason for a reissue.

As 'Lola' has been confirmed as a future deluxe edition, my guess is that the article is wrong.

According to Spin CDs, these reissues are new remasters, mastered by Andrew Sandoval. The last reissues (apart from VGPS) were in 1998, and they sound awful, so hopefully these will be a big improvement.

Thanks much for that. I went back and looked through the thread again and saw multiple mentions of Andrew Sandoval's name and am quite embarassed by my post. I guess that's what happens when you try to surf the internet and work at the same time!

No trouble. I'd take a wait-and-see approach with that Music-News story, by the way; there've been conflicting announcements in the past about this reissue programme, and the release dates they give for Arthur and Muswell Hillbillies might not be the ones Universal is actually planning right now.

CDJournal.com has some new information on these deluxe editions. It's in Japanese, so I'll summarise here.

All three are being released on SHM-CD priced at ¥3,800 each. The catalogue numbers are UICY-75025~6 for Kinks, UICY-75027~8 for Kinda Kinks, and UICY-75029~30 for The Kink Kontroversy. The announced release date is 27 April. No Japanese editions on standard CD have been announced, though I'm sure the European discs will be available as imports.

CDJournal also gives some new information on the track lists; no surprises, but it does nail things down a little bit:

    Kinks, disc one

    1. Beautiful Delilah
    2. So Mystifying
    3. Just Can't Go To Sleep
    4. Long Tall Shorty
    5. I Took My Baby Home
    6. I'm A Lover Not A Fighter
    7. You Really Got Me
    8. Cadillac
    9. Bald Headed Woman
    10. Revenge
    11. Too Much Monkey Business
    12. I've Been Driving On Bald Mountain
    13. Stop Your Sobbing
    14. Got Love If You Want It

No mono/stereo details (but see the notes below for disc two) or other new information.

    15. I Believed You
    16. I'm A Hog For You Baby
    17. I Don't Need You Anymore

Again, no mono/stereo details or other information, but I'm not expecting any startling alternate versions here. In particular, "I Believed You" is not listed as stereo, which is more evidence that the Spin CDs description was just a mistake.

    18. Everybody's Gonna Be Happy

Called an "alternate version," as at Spin CDs.

    19. Long Tall Sally
    20. You Still Want Me
    21. You Do Something To Me
    22. It's Alright
    23. All Day And All Of The Night
    24. I Gotta Move

    Confirmed as mono single mixes.

    25. Louie Louie
    26. I've Got That Feeling
    27. I Gotta Go Now
    28. Things Are Getting Better

    Confirmed as mono EP mixes.

    Kinks, disc two

    1. Beautiful Delilah
    2. So Mystifying
    3. Just Can't Go To Sleep
    4. Long Tall Shorty
    5. I Took My Baby Home
    6. I'm A Lover Not A Fighter
    7. You Really Got Me Album Version
    8. Cadillac
    9. Bald Headed Woman
    10. Revenge
    11. Too Much Monkey Business
    12. I've Been Driving On Bald Mountain
    13. Stop Your Sobbing
    14. Got Love If You Want It

All described as "mono," which presumably puts the stereo LP on disc one. ("You Really Got Me" on this disc, described as "Album Version" at Spin CDs, is simply called "mono" here.)

    15. Don't Ever Let Me Go
    16. I Don't Need You Anymore

    Both labelleled "mono."

    17. Bald Headed Woman (U.S. mono mix)
    18. Too Much Monkey Business (alt. take)
    19. Got Love If You Want It (alt. take)

Same descriptions as at Spin CDs.

    20. Meet The Kinks
    21. Cadillac
    22. Ray Talks About 'You Really Got Me'
    23. You Really Got Me
    24. Little Queenie
    25. I'm A Lover Not A Fighter
    26. All Day And All Of The Night
    27. Ray Talks About the USA
    28. I've Got That Feeling

    All confirmed as BBC tracks.

    Kinda Kinks, disc one

    1. Look For Me Baby
    2. Got My Feet On The Ground
    3. Nothin' In The World Can Stop Me Worryin' 'Bout That Girl
    4. Naggin' Woman
    5. I Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight
    6. Tired Of Waiting For You
    7. Dancing In The Street
    8. Don't Ever Change
    9. Come On Now
    10. So Long
    11. You Shouldn't Be Sad
    12. Something Better Beginning

No information given, but this is obviously the mono LP.

    Kinda Kinks, disc two

    1. Everybody's Gonna Be Happy
    2. Who'll Be The Next In Line
    3. Set Me Free
    4. I Need You
    5. See My Friends
    6. Never Met A Girl Like You Before

    Confirmed as mono single mixes.

    7. A Well Respected Man
    8. Such A Shame
    9. Wait Till The Summer Comes Along
    10. Don't You Fret

    Confirmed as mono EP mixes.

    11. I Go To Sleep
    12. When I See That Girl Of Mine
    13. Tell Me Now So I'll Know
    14. A Little Bit Of Sunlight
    15. There's A New World Just Opening For Me
    16. This I Know

Listed as "demos," as at Spin CDs.

    17. See My Friends (alt. take)
    18. Come On Now (alt. vocal)

Same descriptions as at Spin CDs.

    19. You Shouldn't Be Sad
    20. Tired Of Waiting For You
    21. Everybody's Gonna Be Happy
    22. This Strange Effect
    23. Hide And Seek

    All confirmed as BBC tracks.

    The Kink Kontroversy, disc one

    1. Milk Cow Blues
    2. Ring The Bells
    3. Gotta Get The First Plane Home
    4. When I See That Girl Of Mine
    5. I Am Free
    6. Till The End Of The Day
    7. The World Keeps Going Round
    8. I'm On An Island
    9. Where Have All The Good Times Gone
    10. It's Too Late
    11. What's in Store for Me
    12. You Can't Win

No information, but obviously the mono LP.

    The Kink Kontroversy, disc two

    1. Dedicated Follower Of Fashion
    2. Sittin' On My Sofa

    Confirmed as mono single mixes.

    7. And I Will Love You
    8. I'm Not Like Everybody Else (alt. vocal)
    9. All Night Stand (demo)

Same descriptions as at Spin CDs, except that Spin CDs also says track 5 is stereo.

    10. Milk Cow Blues
    11. Ray Talks About Songwriting
    12. Never Met A Girl Like You Before
    13. Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight
    14. Pete Talks About Records
    15. Till The End Of The Day
    16. A Well Respected Man
    17. Where Have All The Good Times Gone

    All confirmed as BBC tracks.

Something that's worth keeping in mind about the BBC tracks here: "Little Queenie," "I'm a Lover, Not a Fighter," "I've Got That Feeling," "You Shouldn't Be Sad," "Hide and Seek," "Never Met a Girl Like You Before," and "A Well Respected Man" are not available on BBC Sessions. Some of the other announced BBC tracks (e.g., "You Really Got Me") might also be previously unreleased, since there are multiple surviving BBC recordings.

Oh, one more thing: those Japanese SHM-CDs are going to be limited-edition mini-LPs.

Still seems odd that they don't mention the Lola album either. Maybe there just isn't enough suitable material for it. I'd still like to hear some of the backing tracks that were recorded for the Vol. 2 album. I can see why there will be a Muswell Hillbillies deluxe. Even if there aren't many sessions, they could probably pull out a high quality show for the second disc.

Probably — several previous Kinks SHM-CDs are listed there — but I have no idea how competitive their pricing would be.

I bought the recently released (December 2010) Japanese SHM-CDs for KINKS LIVE AT KELVIN HALL, LOLA VS. POWERMAN and PERCY but haven't even opened 'em up yet. I'm fairly certain they're drawn from the existing remasters, not anything new, but still ... they have bonus tracks (except for LIVE AT KELVIN HALL) and are single CDs. These discs are likely a case of old masters presented in SHM-CD "format," hence, they'll only sound as good as the old masters sound, SHM-CDs or no.

Yeah, all the Pye-era SHM-CDs released to date just reuse current British masterings*. Or at least that's what it says on the obis.

The mini-LP packaging for these three will probably be great, but I'm not expecting different sound from the discs themselves.

*The Japanese version of The Singles Collection includes "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" as a bonus track on both regular CD and SHM, and I'm not sure which mastering they used on that track, but the rest of the disc is definitely the same noise-reduced mastering as the British version.

What would be the best 'strategy' to get this series in the US?

    Which new discs?

The Japanese SHM's that are available now? No.

    The upcoming deluxe remasters? Yes...

But Matthew B is saying he doesn't expect them to sound any different than the existing Sanctuary based versions. Why would anyone bother buying these? The bonus tracks!?

You still haven't identified who "them" is.

Matthew B is talking about two completely different things up-thread.

    1. Upcoming deluxe remasters.
    2. Currently available Japanese SHM cds (which like all shm cds, are not newly remastered)...

    Okay. To clarify:

    1) SHM-CDs use a special type of plastic, but apart from that they're just regular CDs.

    2) Masterings on SHM-CDs are usually, though not always, digitally identical copies of previous masterings.

    3) In particular, no Kinks SHM-CDs have used unique masterings to date.

    4) All of the Pye-era SHM-CDs to date — off the top of my head, The Singles Collection, The Ultimate Collection, the ten standard Pye albums, the deluxe Village Green, and Picture Book — reuse the same digital masters currently being used in Europe, except for one bonus track on The Singles Collection.

    5) Some of the other Kinks SHM-CDs from the RCA years and beyond do use masterings issued only in Japan, those these masterings are also available on non-SHM discs in the "K2 HD" product line. The ones I've heard seemed excessively bright.

    6) Some SHM-CDs are mini-LPs, some are just in regular jewel cases.

    7) The three new deluxe editions will be available on mini-LP SHM-CD. These discs will almost certainly be digitally identical to the European deluxe editions; the only differences will lie in the type of plastic used for the CD and in the packaging.

    8) However, that European mastering on those three sets will be a new mastering.

    9) Um.

    10) Anything else?

No idea. I'm not the best guy to ask on questions of availability outside Japan.
