And I will wait until hear what they sound like. I have plenty of shrill sounding Kinks CD's. I don't need any more.

This is very surprising. The previously mentioned deluxe editions for Something Else, Face To Face, etc. are all shelved indefinitely, and suddenly these all pop up...

Most importantly, is there any information on the mastering? Or did they just cram various tracks from the boxset into the existing discs?

I'm hoping that they're going in order of release now. Maybe there will be another batch in the future of Face to Face, Something Else, and Arthur. I'm also hoping Sandoval is on the job! Hopefully with the Beatles, Dylan reissues they are doing their best to track down the best masters with minimal eq futzing.

Judging by what NOS300B is saying, these really do look worthwhile. I would love to hear an alternate vocal on "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" and an alternate take of "See My Friends." I wonder how much is really in the archive of unreleased material. I have my fingers crossed that if they found these, then they must have been searching through reels for best quality masters and such.

So are the regular album tracks in mono I hope?

All three albums are being presented in their original mono mixes, but the original stereo version of The Kinks will also be included. There have never been stereo versions of Kinda Kinks and The Kink Kontroversy.

I plan on playing the same hand.

Village Green deluxe was an improvement; I enjoyed it and it triggered a fresh dive into that period of their career for me. I definitely got my monies-worth. I don't mind re-buys, but I do want more than nice packaging.

I'm really hoping that something very special and very well-done will be in the offing for Face To Face and Something Else. I very dearly love both of these albums.

Thanks for the spincds.com links, NOS300B.

    From Kinks, Disc 1:

No way in hell this is stereo. (It's from a 1963 mono acetate.) I'll bet it's actually tracks 1 through 14 that are stereo, and the label was accidentally shifted.

I still can't figure out why this track has been placed as early as this, even before "Long Tall Sally." Up till now the story has been that the song was inspired by a tour with Kim Weston & the Earl Van Dyke Band in November 1964, well after the release of "All Day and All of the Night," and the publishing demo was submitted on 10 December that year.

    From Kinks, Disc 2:

None of the other Kinks tracks on this disc are labelled "album version." Maybe Disc 1 has the stereo album except for the single version of "You Really Got Me," and Disc 2 has the mono album except for this track in its fake-echo version.

So the other occurrence on Disc 1 is presumably a new stereo mix.

Nice to be able to hear this at last. Though does anyone know for sure whether it's not just a fold-down? The stereo mix also has a single-tracked vocal.

    From Kinda Kinks, Disc 2:

Probably an early take from the "Set Me Free" session, a couple of weeks before the released version was recorded; no idea what it sounds like, except that they weren't satisfied with it.

I hope this is take 1. We already have takes 2 and 3, both break-downs, on Picture Book.

From The Kink Kontroversy, Disc 2:

Not the (officially) unreleased alternate mono version. Ah well.

I expect this is the band demo they offered the Animals, and if so, I expect Ray is singing.

SpinCDs reproduces sections of the press release and Andrew Sandoval is credited for the remastering of "Kinda Kinks". The other two have no credits but it looks like he did the whole batch.

Wasn't there an earlier version of "You Really Got Me" recorded, but then rerecorded? It'd be great to hear that first version if it still exists. I really hope these sound good!

I think that may still exist in Shel Talmy's personal stash, and he's absolutely brutal when it comes to financial compensation...

There were at least two earlier versions — a demo, and the initial Pye recording that Ray complained sounded "like Phil Spector" — but I've never seen any indication that they still exist.

No. Shel never owned the tapes. Different contract from what he had with the Who.
