I missed this story the first time around. I love reading about cool "inside" mastering and recording stories like this. Thanks Kevin for posting this and thank you Steve for bringing this one back from hibernation!

From the top might not be good if you really enjoy the classic pop ELO stuff. The first few albums are quite different. Still good, but different. I say go to a used vinyl shop and grab Eldorado, Face The Music, A New World Record, and Out Of The Blue and enjoy. Then go back further if you like.

    Hi Steve,

Irony discussing this LP. I was playing my UA US pressing cut by Kevin Gray last night. Amazing sonics. My copy is one of the better pressings and is quiet. A classic! One of the better sounding LP's I own!

This is the kind of story I wish would show up in the liner notes to reissues. Sometimes I think just getting the artist's perspective makes it less interesting.

One thing and maybe I'm just confused... doesn't Jeff give himself and Richard Tandy credit for the telephone effect or are we talking about the actual sound of the effect?

We're talking about the tonality of the sound when it starts, like it's played thru a phone.

    Thanks.

The story makes the alternate version seem all the more interesting.

Thanks Steve for reminding me of this very interesting thread, which I remember reading back when it was new in 2003! As a still huge fan of The Electric Light Orchestra, especially “Eldorado” thru “Time”, so ever since hearing “Telephone Line”, I always imagine Kevin sweating over mixing it on the fly! Great job, Kev!
