Thanks Kevin. It's nice to know of your contributions to "Telephone Line". A really great song with a mighty hook - I loved that song to death.

Who owns the Jet label? "A New World Record" on SACD would be a treat.

    Regards,
    Geoff

Probably wouldn't matter, as the 45 doesn't have the funky telephone noises at the beginning. (I assume that's what Kevin was talking about.)

I think Lynne has the masters for just about the whole ELO catalog.... FWICT, Sony does not have free reign to market ELO just any old way.

You sure? I never had the 45, but I always assumed it did. That's all you ever heard on the radio in 1977.

Yeah. I have the original United Artists 1000 on green vinyl, and it starts with the six (or seven) notes on the synthesizer. The single also has a couple edits and fades early.

  13. "That wacky Jeff Lynne"

    Steve or Kevin,

Do you have any idea on Jeff Lynnes' position on multichannel and/or hi-rez releases of "A New World Record", "Out of the Blue" or, for that matter, any ELO recording?

Thanks for the interesting story about one of my favorite albums!

My question is how does one identify a first pressing Jet ELO album and not a reissue? Any clues....

Hi Todd, look for the early UA/Jet pressing with custom label (IIRC, side 1 is black but otherwise looks like a standard brown/tan UA label of the time & lists all songs, side 2 is the ELO logo in full color). Look for the Artisan stamp in the dead wax. The stamp looks kinda like a flying saucer thing.. The album cover is embossed (the ELO "spaceship") and the inner LP sleeve is custom cardboard w/lyrics & photos.

There are different RE #s after the etched matrix numbers - what might this be, a lacquer number?? The early UA/Jet is really really good (probably the best there is), and they're out there for not much $$.

Kevin, that had to be tricky to start applying the EQ at EXACTLY the right moment. It seems like the EQ goes funny right at the vocal entrance & not a split second before (is that right?). I'd be sweating too! Amazing story, thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Mike! ELO albums can sometimes get trickie, especially this one because there were so many pressings and reissues, etc......

I love stories like this. I get sweaty palms just thinking about it.

We did some similar "live" moves on the new Tom Petty LP. An adventure!

I need to move down to California or somewhere to take some audio engineering classes, so I can do this myself. I know, John Book compared to Steve Hoffman may be nothing, and I might get a demo by The Hemmorhoids instead of Close To The Edge, but hey, I have hopes :agree:

Anyway, this was a great story. I've always been a casual fan of Electric Light Orchestra, I know I've bought one or two 45's (including one of the purple ones on Jet) but never their albums. This board has made me interested, not so much for all of the Beatles references and influences are in their music, but to be able to hear what Lynne and the band did in the studio. I don't even know where to start, and I would prefer going album by album rather than a box set. I guess from the top, right?

Are these live moves unique to the LP, meaning they are not on the CD?

Similar to the CD but done in "real time" while the lacquer was spinning. Blow a move on the third song and the side had be started over again from scratch. Sigh.

    Simon A Arrr!

Well you guys did it! I have read so much about E.L.O. these last months that it got me intrigued. After reading this though, I gave in and bought these LPs (quite clean actually):

    Eldorado
    A New World Record
Out Of The Blue (not SR, alas)
    Discovery (not SR, alas)
    Time
    Secret Messages

I will give these babies a spin during the weekend. I think it will be quite enjoyable...

Thank you for resurrecting this thread and sharing the story!

P.S. I already had Xanadu and loved the E.L.O. songs on it, so it's not as if I did not know what I was getting into... ;)
