Barbera? There is a resemblance...and M-G-M has a Tom & Jerry connection, after all....

It's an uncanny resemblance if it isn't Barby :agree:.

He is, indeed, Joseph Barbera, the "drawing half" of the Hannah-Barbera partnership. Malc, the no-prize is in the mail. :)

Fantastic - what don't I win? My guess is it's the unedited Tom & Jerry DVDs :D (for those who don't know what I'm talking about see here)

I have been really into Tom & Jerry again since getting those UK DVDs and even went to the local University library the other day just to see what they had on the subject!

So, my first thoughts for people connected with MGM were William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. After a quick search on the web I ruled out Hanna but came across this picture of Barbera:

    You can't mistake those eyebrows!

Thanks again Ken - I'll let you know when the prize hasn't arrived .

Hey Ken, aren't we rather overdue for a new director pic?

Yikes, I am a visitor in my own thread! ;) I'll start the guessing with "René Clair". The somewhat pointy chin doesn't gibe, though.

    Ken,

I didn't mean to step on any toes...just thought it might be fun to sit back and guess for a while yourself.

As to your guess: Nope. As you would say, keep 'em coming.

Okay, John...how's about a little hint?

Yes...Sorry, but I was traveling for work most of the day.

Here's a couple: As much as he was known for his directing (in the silent era), he also had an acting career at the same time. And, he changed his name; the one he used for film credits often causes confusion since it is the same as another well-known (at the time) actor.

He looks a little like Irving Thalberg.

    Nope.

Another hint: he directed part of a title that has been made three times, twice as a silent and once as a sound picture.

Wild guess: Victor Seastrom (Sjostom) of "Wild Strawberries" fame? And I mean wild, I can't remember what he looked like! This dude has a bit of the Barrymore look to him, too. The chin thing.

    Nope.

Another hint: He directed a film that is considered to have ignited the career of one of the silent era's biggest stars--who died tragically at a young age.

    Nope.

Clue: He also served as one of the editors of Von Stroheim's (butchered) magnum opus.
