You do realize that whatever set it is that you are referring to is a bootleg, correct?

I'm looking forward to Winterland, but a bit puzzled about In The West... it's so damn boring to have tracks from the various shows all scattered all over the place...

Huge news for me since In the West was one of my first music purchases in early 80s. IIRC, Red House is simply amazing!

    thanks!

In The West might be being released because it's a perennial fan favorite. It was the first Hendrix vinyl LP I ever owned.

I'll be waiting for 4 cd Winterland set. I'll also keep my Ryko cd's as well.

I also put together a 2 cd of all offically released Winterland performances taken from:

    Live At Winterland
    Live At Winterland +3
    Jimi Hendirx Concerts
    Variations On A Theme

One thing about the band is that they sound a little slower, perhaps tired. Some of the songs are slower and heavier sounding...ala Vanilla Fudge or pre-dating early Sabbath.

I'd start with the long drums solos and the 3 songs that only exist on the audience tape. Then I'd cut the 2 performances that break down because of equipment problems.

Unless the 6 disc boot has changed it's not really 6 discs anyway since disc 3 (1st show on the 11th) was mostly "filler" from Chicago.

Perhaps it helps that it's been so easy to accumulate boots over the past dozen years compared to the old tape trading days so like a lot of folks I do tend to have this stuff complete already, but I've really come to appreciate good editing. There's tremendous potential to present the material in a better way than reality and I've generally been very pleased with the sound of the box sets. So my initial reaction of "phooey" has turned to I'll drink the lemonade (Kool Aid?) rather than moan about no RAH (foiled again!).

Is the "purple box" officially out of print, now that the catalogue has moved labels? If so, I can sort of see the logic in reissuing HITW - here's the most recent homes for this material that I can see,

    1. "Johnny B. Goode" - purple box, disc 4
    2. "Lover Man" - Live at Berkeley
    3. "Blue Suede Shoes" - purple box, disc 4
    4. "Voodoo Chile" - purple box, disc 3

    Side two

    1. "The Queen" - Blue Wild Angel
    2. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - Blue Wild Angel
    3. "Little Wing" - purple box, disc 3
    4. "Red House" - purple box, disc 3

But really, anyone that owns the above has no need of a reissue of Hendrix In The West - they're going to have to come up with some pretty good extras, to make it worthwhile.

I'm kind of hoping they use the Reprise side order, with "The Queen" kicking off side one. Probably won't happen, but that's what I grew up with, and the order presented here never felt right to me. I know the record is cobbled together from various things and doesn't remotely represent a real set, but in real life The Queen is a set opening cut, and Voodoo Chile is a set closer. Red House is a mid-set cut, and here it's on the end.

If I said I'm thrilled with these releases I would be lying. I'll bet I have most of what will see the light of day. It will be good to have an official release on a nearly complete Winterland, with the junk cut out and in good quality. "In The West" sounds interesting with 5 extra tracks as it was a great compilation already of live JHE.

I'm disappointed with another stall on RHA or Miami. Oh….my mind is messed up going round and round…must their be all these colors ….. ;)

I'm thrilled that In The West is on the release schedule. I hope that one of the bonus tracks is Hear My Train from Berkeley. That would make one of the greatest live albums ever even better!

Does anybody know if these going to be the February or
October '68 Winterland shows? Personally, I'd like a
    combination of both.

You know I'd like to see Feb recordings, as I was there.. Crawl Out Your Window, Driving South, Catfish. He also played Sgt Peppers the following night. Great happy shows. I don't think those were recorded professionally, just the BG board tapes, if they even exist for all four nights.

I would lose my mind if professional tapes of the 2/68 Winterland shows turned up. I'm pretty sure these will be the 10/68 shows though. This will be a huge upgrade over the boots (which are very narrow stereo if not mono) so I'm pretty excited.

I liked the mixes of the Winterland Fire and Hey Joe from the EH Voodoo Child comp. It`s nice they are finally releasing this stuff seeing how it`s been ready to go for a very long time.
I don`t mind if they don`t include all the uninspired parts.

So of this material, which tracks above are not worthy of legit commercial release in the 2011 4 CD set, and why? And which specific tracks were culled from which shows for the 1987 Ryko disc?

  23. I thought there was a "Dear Mr. Fantasy" somewhere in one of those nights at Winterland.

But I'm not seeing it in the 6-disc listings -- was I just dreaming it?

Also, was "Calling Long Distance" a legit release? I've never seen one, but my cursory Googling of it just now, makes it look pretty suspicious.

Hendrix archivist and biographer Caesar Glebbeek published a series of CDs available only to subscribers to his "Univibes" magazine. Despite their bootleg-like quality, they were approved for release by Alan Douglas. (source: http://hendrix.guide.pagesperso-orange.fr/univibes.htm)
I don't have them, but they're not OOP.

  25. I really LIKE the edited live Fillmore East (31-Dec-69) versions of Fire and Foxey Lady at the end of disc #3 of "West Coast Seattle Boy". Can't remember if they're both edited, or just one (and my copy is 1,000 miles away at the moment) -- but at 4:41, "Fire" surely must be, and I suspect they both are.

IIRC, that short "Fire" is GREAT!!! - and with a lengthy drum and/or bass solo, it wouldn't have been as notable.

So as far as I'm concerned, some judicious editing of the Winterland material (while giving us 4 solid discs of stuff) would be MORE than welcome.
