    Aqualung is a given.

Then I would go with Thick as a Brick and THEN Stand Up, which just follows.

Right now it's Stand Up. Ask me in a couple of weeks and it will probably change. :D

of course Aqualung by ten miles, that's what Tull stands for forever.
Next comes Thick as a Brick, Passion Play and Minstrel In The Gallery.
Their early Blues Efforts would never made them anything more than a second rate British Rock Combo. I like Stand Up and even some of This Was, not much love for Benefit. but tbh. if there was no Aqualung Tull would long been forgotten...
But i am biased AQUALUNG was my favourite record in 1971, something i will never forget.. (like Paranoid + Deep Purple in Rock the year before..)

I love all 3 albums, but if I had to list them order from most favorite to least, it would be:

    Stand Up
    Thick as a Brick
    Aqualung

Aqualung. The others miss by a tiny tiny fraction.

Aqualung is the band's best overall work and one damn fine collection of songs. Their most essential album, and the one Jethro Tull is best known for.
My personal favourite Thick As A Brick (as one long and impressive musical composition) is equally excellent.
Just a notch below would be Stand Up.

One can't go wrong with any of Tull's 70's studio albums though...
    Benefit
    Songs From The Wood
    Living In The Past
    Warchild
    A Passion Play
    Heavy Horses

    1-Thick
    2-Aqualung
    3-Stand Up

However, 'A Passion Play' tops them all

I'd agree that Passion Play is a major work, highly underrated, and amazing on MFSL, nut it can't top Thick, which is more major and more accessable.

I'd also put Stand Up before Aqualung, but that's because, as I age, I find Aqualung a bit too bombastic, and in your face, and I've a soft spot for Stand Up as it was one of my first Tull vinyls and it "stands up", both literaly and musically...

But, above both of those I'd put Benefit. Someone here said Steve was lined up to remaster it but it got canceled!! A travesy! Anyone know the Tull tale?

And where is the love for Minstrel, Ian's darkest, most introspective offering?

So chronologcal is the way to go huh? I agree, early Tull is grand, but I think they recovered nicely from Aqualung with the Life's A Long Song Ep, Thick as a Brick, and A Passion Play... :)
