I have just about every Jethro Tull album and like most of them. 'Stand Up' was an album I bought just a few years ago and it's become my favorite. If your a Tull fan, check it out, it's a very strong album.

And if the MFSL is the best for Stand Up, what would be the nest best oncd that you can find?

The next best CD for Stand Up is the USA first issue - it will do justa fine. :D

They are all a bit different aren't they?

    Gotta go with Aqualung.
Nothing beats that album as a whole. I pick Benefit as my # 2.

    Benefit.

Great songs, and an enigmatic, stylised performance/recording that's unique.

From your list Tootull, I'd say Aqualung. A real rock classic. BTW, I just ordered the 33 1/3 book about the making of Aqualung.

No contest: Thick as a Brick.

    Well...OK, Aqualung's pretty great too!

I like Aqualung and Thick As A Brick equally. Stand Up is far below those two for me.

Now, Benefit on the other hand beats them all!

A Passion Play is Tull's crowning achievement.

While I admire Tull's "prog" moment (Thick As A Brick/Passion Play), it's the song-oriented stuff that really gets me.

My faves (incomplete, as there's lots of latter-day Tull I - gasp! - haven't heard yet):

    Stand Up
    Benefit
    Aqualung
    Living In The Past
    Minstrel In The Gallery
    Broadsword And The Beast
    Crest Of A Knave

Oops, we've pooped this thread well past its design parameters, which are a choice between Stand Up, Aqualung and Thick As A Brick. Sorry Tootull!

Aqualung is the album that got me into Tull. Yes, I know, not very original, but there it is. I picked it up 'cause it was the album with the radio hits. I also learned to play a couple of the acoustic numbers during me brief time taking guitar lessons.

My favorite album now, though, is Stand Up. Anderson's voice retains some of that fake-whiteboy blues thing while easing into the folkster he'd want to become later. I like the space in the arrangements and the production that lets it breathe (some of that gets lost in Benefit). To me, it has a similar feelign to The Band's first two albums, in that they sound very loose, like a bunch of friends jamming, even though it's all actually very tightly put together. The only time a Tull album would ever feel so intimate again would be what would become my 2nd favorite Tull album, Minstrel in the Gallery.

I listened to Aqualung the other night, and must say that my humble original Chrysalis CD sounds just fine, in a flat-transfer-from-copy-master sort of way. If you can't afford the ever-rarer DCC CD, dig up one of these! (Chrysalis VK41044)

    BENEFIT BENEFIT BENEFIT.....!!!!!

Their Pepper/Revolver/Smile/Ok Computer/Out of the blue/Moon Safari/Village Green.....call it what you will but it's a sadly neglected stunner in this band's and music's history.

'Alive and well and living in....'? Did he ever better that??

It's too bad American record buyers never got a chance to hear that one on Benefit.
