Just picked up VK 41044 DIDX 68 today. $10 The DADC hub ring made me curious as to what mastering it is

    Matrix code: "DIDX-68 7"
"Made in USA - Digital Audio Disc Corp." stamped on the plastic ring
    "barcode" stamped in mirror band
Label uses black ink and stamped VK41044|DIDX 68|RE-1.
    Total time: 43:25:27

    EAC levels: 100.0 % / 92.0 % / 89.9 % /100.0 % / 89.5 % / 100.0 % / 100.0 % / 100.0 % / 96.8 % / 100.0 % / 86.3 %

So this looks the old crappy one. I'll have to actually listen to it of course.

  2. I also picked up one with the VK 41044 catalog number, CRC edition, and made by DADC but it looks quite different from Keith's:

    Total time: 43:25

Notice it has DIDY 000068 on the label but DIDX 68 in the hub.

I unfortunately sold off my original Aqualung CD when I bought the 25th anniversary edition. (I know, I know. I didn't know about this forum yet, and believed the companies when the said that ALL remasters were better)

How do people feel about the Japanese Mini LP Jethro Tull Aqualung CDs? They seem to be fairly reasonable and normally have a good reputation. I don't have any more info on the disk, just saw them for sale...

    Thanks!

I noted in posts #22 and #96 of this thread that I have a similar disc to the ones that you cite. The matrix code is "DIDX-68 7", and it runs about 43:25. My disc does not show "RE-1" on the label side, but it has the same peak levels as the other 43:25 discs cited here. In any case, I think this disc sounds pretty good. I wouldn't call it "crappy" as Michael did. I haven't compared it against the 42:57 disc side by side, but I like the 42:57 disc as well.

The only early Chrysalis disc I was not happy with was the Japan-for-U.S. pressing. It sounds poor to me. It's only significant to me as a collectable, as it is quite rare.

My disc is an earlier pressing, as evidenced by the black text and "DIDY 68" at 9 o'clock. Nevertheless, our discs have the same mastering. :)

You will when you do a side by side...

...the 43:25 pales in comparison to the 42:57 on a critical listen...

I firmly stand by my statement...

That's O.K. :) It's just that when I listened to the Japan-for-U.S. on its own, I was not pleased with it. It sounded dull. The 43:25 disc sounded pretty good to me on its own.

OK, if you do a side by side let me know what you think.:)

Thanks Michael! I will do it when I get home. I seem to recall the intro being chopped off on "Aqualung" (the song) on at least one of my versions :shake:
Does this ring a bell with anybody else?

My VK 41044 DIDX 68 RE-1 CD is missing the first or rep 6-note intro on "Aqualung". My M.U. is not.

No. The 1998 remaster is atrocious

Do you think that the remaster is worse than the VK 41044 RE-1 (with the full 'Wind Up' but missing the first riff of the title track)?

The '98 remaster is easily the worst version I've ever heard. It sucks rocks. Back in 2004, when I got the DCC gold CD, I did a side-by-side comparison with the '98 remaster. My wife was home at the time, and she couldn't believe how bad the remaster was, and she is no audiophile. I haven't played the '98 remaster since.

Ok, Michael is a million percent correct on this one! In the pictures below, the version in the top of the pictures (the 42:57 version) easliy blows away the other (the 43:25 version). It isn't even close!

Your point? I posted this ICE article as well here on the forum.

So what...this CD still crushes everything in it's path worldwide (too bad it's missing the last 20 secs.) excluding the GOLD DCC...

Do you own this CD Larry? Have you heard it Larry?
    If not, what's your point?

without a doubt a clear cheap alternative to the out of reach GOLD DCC that so many desire and cannot afford...
