The obvious companion records are Jazz Samba with Getz and Charlie Byrd and Getz/Gilberto 2; a live set of the same material from Jazz Samba and Getz/Gilberto.

Here is what AMG has to say and recommend on the Bossa Nova subgenre. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=77:308

All that being said, this is kind of peripheral to jazz. Nothing wrong with that, but a couple of steps deeper into Brazilian music and you have gotten away from jazz, which was the original thrust of your question. I mention this because I bought one of those Jobim records that did not feature Stan Getz and did not much like it.

I've been listening to a lot of Jackie McLean lately. These are today's 10 favorites. All on Blue Note except where listed:

1955 The New Tradition - Roulette (my mono and stereo CDs are titled "Jackie McLean Quintet")
    1961 A Fickle Sonance
    1962 Jackie McLean Quintet
    1962 Let Freedom Ring
    1963 One Step Beyond
    1963 Destination Out!
    1964 It's Time
    1964 Action
    1965 Right Now!
1978 New Wine in Old Bottles - East Wind

OK, sounds like we should look into Bossa Nova and Samba. "Jazz Samba" looks like a good next pick.

What are your impressions of this music? Dated? Good for the beginner?
