So given that the SACD is not available for a reasonable price, what is the next best digital version of this album ?

IIRC, Joe Palmaccio mastered the stereo mix, and Darcy Proper worked on the (repurposed to 5.1) quad mix.

is there that big a SQ difference between the SACD and the 03 remaster?

I thought I read here awhile back that the remastered CD was not good. It would surprise me if that were the case because one would think they would use the same DSD transfer as was used for the SACD (converted to 16/44.1 PCM, of course).

What reminded me was the $80.00 copy in the classifieds section that has just been sitting there...ignored...:sigh:

    well, they didn't
the SACD is definitely made in a different environment, as it does not contain the bonus track of the remastered CD (compared e.g. to EWF SACD which contained same bonuses as the remastered CD)

You realize, don't you, that the minute Steve endorses an out of print CD/SACD all remaining copies will immediately disappear and ebay prices will skyrocket? You're asking for trouble!

Been enjoying this since the day it was released, Dec 4, 2001. I picked it up with Ship Ahoy and Blow by Blow, if I remember correctly. It names Darcy Proper for mastering the original mix by Al Quaglieri.

I like this sacd too. I think I got this for less than the equivalent of USD 12.00, sealed at a local hi-fi dealer here in Metro Manila about two years ago.

I bought this from PurePrarie on this forum about three months ago near mint.
    $85 plus shipping.
I thought at the time that it was a lot. But I really dig the music.

It seems to me that the on the surround program the rear channels are reversed - on Summer Breeze and That Lady the guitar solos come out of the front left and rear right speakers. When you switch the rear speakers the solos come out of the front left and rear left speakers and everything seems way more cohesive for it. Reminds me of a lot of the GRT quadraphonic 8 track tapes (Steely Dan, etc.) where the rear channels were reversed due to poor quality control at the duplication facility.

A good fall-back position would be for a super great mastering person with the initials SH to get his hands on the tapes and make an Audio Fidelity Gold disc out of it. Hint hint hint!

Sounds good. Audio Fidelity needs to loose some funk and soul, please!

  21. :wave:If Steve can't get Marshall to license this for Audio Fidelity, maybe he can talk Chad Kassem at Analogue Productions into doing a multichannel hybrid SACD release with his mastering handiwork on it???

Finally got hold of a copy of this and am really digging the stereo mix. I put the multichannel mix on first and, as has been noted, the rear channels might be flipped. Also one track is missing a few seconds in the rear speakers at the start. But.... Ernie's guitar solo fades early in 'Summer Breeze!' Sacrilege!
I realise it must have been that way in the original quad mix, but geez!
