Another Nonesuch classical title: Paul Jacobs - Piano Etudes by Bartók, Busoni, Messiaen, Stravinsky. Nonesuch H-71334 (1976) Masterdisk both sides, RL side 1 (handwriting on the matrix numbers looks the same both sides). Guessing it must be a reissue if it was cut at Masterdisk.
Last night I picked up a Polydor copy of the Beatles featuring Tony Sheridan and it has Sterling - RL in the deadwax on one side. Has anyone else seen this? Searched the thread and didn't see anything about it...
Odd that no one mentioned it before this. It pretty common AFAIK. My copy is the same. Sounds great, BTW.
Picked up another Roy Buchanan LP on Polydor: In the Beginning (USA, 1974). STERLING RL side 1. No stamp or sig on side 2, although the handwriting looks similar to my untrained eye. Both sides sound great. On the sleeve, mastering is credited to George Horn.
In the April 28, 2011 issue of Rolling Stone (with Adele on the cover), Bob Ludwig has a very short profile under the heading "Best Ears", referring to his mastering work (and it oncludes a pic of him with Bruce)
I wouldn't exaclty call it a "must have" but I just noticed that The Who's triple LP Join Together, from their 1989 reunion tour, is credited to Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk. No initials in the deadwax, but it does have Masterdisk inscribed on three of the six sides. Could be a credit carried over from the CD. One that is worth chasing down is Renaissance Man (1984) by Jamaaladeen Tacuma on Gramavision. I have a German pressing but it has Masterdisk RL in the deadwax. His Show Stopper album from 1983 on the same label has a credit to Bob Ludwig on the sleeve, but my German copy doesn't appear to be his work.
Another one: Chick Corea - Delphi 1: Solo Piano Improvisations. Polydor, 1979. Masterdisk RL both sides. Sleeve also contains lots of fun facts about L. Ron Hubbard
AC/DC - Back in Black AC/DC - For Those About To Rock We Salute You Def Leppard - Pyromania Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy Rush - Moving Pictures
Found today: The James Gang Miami U.S. Atco, Sterling RL Is this essential? Only if you are a Tommy Bolin aficionado. Even then maybe not . Let me see how it sounds and get back to you. . .
I have one of these too and the tiny writing (very unlike usual RL's) always made me wonder. Today, I picked up an original copy of Boz Scagg's s/t album and noticed the same small initials. The album was mastered by Rob Grenell. So, I think the dusty in memphis is actually mastered by Grenell not Ludwig.
I found a copy of L. Shure playing Schubert sonata for Audiofon. It is a great mastering with profound bass from a great Peter Mcgrath recording.
Does it look like this? (source - this thread) The RL in The Band's Brown Album (also from '69) looks similar. The more familiar RL (with the serif-like flourish on the R) seems to have appeared the following year (earliest example I have is Hendrix's Band of Gypsys).
The initials on the dusty album (that I have) are nothing like this one on zepp II, nor his later style, like the stranger. They are very tiny. I really didn't think they were Ludwig's, but I wasn't sure until I found the same initials on the Boz Scaggs lp. For all I know, there may be an RL copy of dusty somewhere, but I'm certain that the very small initials on original copies of the dusty album are Rob Grenells.
Friday Night in San Francisco & full list The jacket credits Ludwig, but my copy has MASTERDISK BK in both leadouts. Also, thanks to whomever provided the link to the albumcredits.com site: http://albumcredits.com/Profile/99898#/Profile/Artists/99898 That compilation of credits would seem more complete?
Apologies if this has already been mentioned (I don't think it has). The Paul Butterfield Blues Band - East-West. Later Elektra "butterfly" label issue. "Skinny" RL and SS hand-etched both sides.
I found this one today: Japan: Kabuki & Other Traditional Music (1980) on Nonesuch Records mastered at Masterdik (RL on the deadwax) a very nice record !!!
