Trombone is a great instrument when it is played by a good musician and George Lewis is one of them.

I think Chicago and BST are pretty much the last thing on the minds of these bands. The horn players they emulate are Rico Rodriguez, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, and other horn men from The Skatalites and other first-wave ska combos.

If I'm wrong, I'll just take one of these. :)

Got to add Wayne Henderson to the list. He really made that Crusaders sound special. After he left in 1976, the sound wasn't quite the same, well it wasn't the same. He also became a really good producer, did a nice solo album in 1977 called "Big Daddy's Place." Wayne also did two records with Roy Ayers in 1978 and 1980.

The trombone can have such a nice sound. Out of all of the players, I probably enjoy Wayne's work the best.

You have to include the 1980 Top 5 hit song by Diana Ross, "I'm Coming Out", produced by Nile Rogers & Bernard Edwards of Chic which features an actual prominent trombone solo that was played by Meco Monardo...Yes that's the same "Meco" responsible for the "disco" version of the Star Wars theme.

How about a Brubeck on Trombone?

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet have a CD called Classified on Koch. Chris Brubeck plays both trombone and bass. Son of Dave.

Good call! I always thought Henderson was the backbone of the Crusaders' sound. Chain Reaction is still a monster album to listen to today!

A quick skim of this thread reveals that half the people who responded didn't understand the OP's question. Which was, is the trombone dead in modern jazz? Talking about Trombone Dixie and guys who died 40 years ago kind of misses the point.

I saw a college-age jazz quartet recently in which the trombone was the only horn. In fact, this was the first time I had ever seen that type of configuration live and I was impressed at the power and range of the instrument.

Thanks! I thought so too, he was the heart of the sound for me, without him it wasn't the same. Chain Reaction,2nd Crusade and Unsung Heroes are some of my favorites.

And thinking about Wayne, I just remembered another guy Raul DeSouza. He's been around forever, did one album for Milestone and I mostly know him from two albums from Capitol in the late 70s.

To kind of quote Frank Zappa, the trombone is not dead - it just smells funny. :D

On the topic of different kinds of trombones - from some of the things I've read, the valve trombone gets a lot of slack from various critics/musicians/fans. Some people look down on the valve bone as an inferior instrument compared to the slide trombone. But Brookmeyer, among others, has made classic music playing valve.

From a players perspective, (haven't touched either in years but when I did play both) I would MUCH rather play the slide. Something about the valve trombone just doesn't sit right with most trombone players.
