Sam, Yes. I did want a thorough and good mastering comp. IIRC Playlist is missing a number of hit songs...

I played one of the cds all the way through today. What I appreciate about the box are the non single tracks or low charting single tracks that focus on the Philly Soul aspect and give a broader picture of what these two were about.

GH comps that aim towards the hits paint more of a "pop" picture and H&O were more than that.

    Am I making sense here?

    Oh...and the sound? :righton:

Thanks for the waveforms, Grant. I'll stick with the old PCD1-4858.

Thanks Grant. I thought Joseph Palmaccio did the mastering.

Here are the reissue notes I found online

    http://www.albumlinernotes.com/Rock_and_Soul_Part_1.html

Produced for reissue by Rob Santos & Jeremy Holiday
Mastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio at Sony Music Studios, NY Legacy A&R: Steve Berkowitz

So, If your lists Vic Anesini as mastering, did they do this twice...?

Anesini only did the box set and Playlist, AFAIK.

  12. All those 'Legendary' sets sound great. Lou Reed, Harry Nilsson, Petula Clark, Elvis Presley, etc.

  13. All three of those look to be peak-limited, albeit gently (Sarah Smile)

I've got the original CD issue of this so didn't bother with the reissue but great to read the late T-Bone Wolk's liner notes on the "new" tracks.

Vic Anesini always does a great job. The Playlist compilation and box set sound fantastic.

I can be wrong. My CDs are boxed up so I can't double check.

    Thank you.

  19. The Playlist disc pretty even split between single versions (or a "video" version for "Out Of Touch") that had never appeared on CD before, and LP versions that are digital clones of the 2-CD Ultimate set, which was later repackaged as Essential. (If you really want numbers, I can dig out my notes tonight.)

Playlist isn't intended as a giant career overview, but a handy way to fill in the cracks for tracks that don't appear elsewhere, like the 45 versions. Same is true for Eddie Money's Playlist disc, which unearthed the 45 version of "Two Tickets To Paradise". I'm still hoping for Billy Joel's "Sometimes A Fantasy" 45 version turning up on one of these, but I'm not holding my breath.

Quite a few thumbs up for Legendary and I did go with the box set. Just curious is all about the Looking Back import. True it is missing a few key singles. How is the mastering on that and the compression?

I've been listening to Greatest Hits: Rock 'n Soul, Part 1 (not the remaster) for years and I've always thought it sounded really good? Far better than some of the "Essential" comps afterward. Does the box set sound that much significantly better than Rock 'n Soul?
