From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) includes the Dead's nearly complete, previously unreleased show from May 12, 1974, at the University of Nevada in Reno, playing an outdoor football stadium during a huge wind storm. The classic performance features all of the highs you expect from the Grateful Dead at this time: a huge "China Cat Sunflower" > "I Know You Rider," From The Mars Hotel tunes including "U.S. Blues" and "Ship Of Fools," a second set jam featuring one of those versions of “The Other One,” and plenty of classic Dead such as "Brown-Eyed Women," "Tennessee Jed," "Mississippi Half-Step," "Truckin'," "Sugar Magnolia," and so many more great songs from their entire career. This is prime Wall Of Sound era Grateful Dead, from the sound system's first-ever road show. Coming on the heels of the Dead's two months in the studio recording Mars Hotel, it was an exceptionally exciting time in Grateful Dead world, even by their lofty standards. i usually never say no to another chunk of great 1974 GD-- but this particular 74 show is an odd one to be pairing with 'mars hotel' in that they only do two songs from mars hotel in the concert! just a random observation, and its probably a great 3 cd set...
Only missing the Promised Land opener, is the beginning messed up? The usual first song horrific mixing issues? Easily could have fit it on the first disk to make it complete.
Wish they'd have gone with 6/20/74. (Which would've added "Scarlet" and "China Doll" to the festivities.) And somewhere squeezed on that great full band "Pride of Cucamonga" rehearsal where Phil has them restart the jam interlude : )
Promised Land was left off because the mix is all over the place, just Bob's voice and drums for most of it. The problems get straightened out a minute or so into Sugaree.
I thought this show might be paired with the 50th, and though it’s not terribly surprising, it is some sweet 1974. I’d imagine that Omni show will be a Pick one day. Grateful Dead "Here Comes Sunshine 1973" 17 CD Box Set *
Being a short show itself, seems Omni would've been ideal for this release. But a Pick would leave room for a bonus chunk from another night for disc 3. I'd even take 2nd set as the bonus chunk on a Dave's!
The Other One is timed at 21:40 so they haven't patched in the reel change in the middle, just smoothed it. There is a lot of tuning/dead air in set 1 that they have cut out.
That is how they handled the May 1974 shows from the box set a few years ago too. Some had good audience sources they could have used for patches but they haven't usually done so.
Ordered both CDs and LP. I’m powerless to resist at this point in life. Besides just attended Emmylou Harris show at Capital Theater …Port Chester last week. Practically a museum to The Dead ….and can’t forget their 1971 run there. Also picked up Garcia t-shirt.
Green limited vinyl, 3-cd set & T-shirt for me. It’s a terrific studio album imho. The Unbroken Chain version alone is worth it but enjoy the entire album.
