    They are both great but the Sanyo Japan is a bit smoother to my ears. Zal's has some EQ, as I believe I've discussed here. It's great but not quite as nice as the flat transfer on my Sonopress version.

    Thank your for posting the samples.

    I made a little shootout between samples from 3 different versions of Live. I started with 4 but the Atlantic and the Nimbus are indeed the same.

    This is what I think:

    The Nimbus/Atlantis has a fatter bottom end. Compared to the others it seems a little pumped up. I’m not longer sure this is a good thing.

    The PDO/Sonopress 1 seems to have most tape hiss but to me it also sounds a little unfocused. I guess they used a higher generation tape as a source?

    The Sanyo Japan disc seams to be slightly lowered in the top end making it sound a little closed in but apart from that very good.

    I think I would rank them as follows:

    1. Sanyo Japan/Sonopress 2
    2. Nimbus/Atlantis
    3. PDO/Sonopress 1

    It is, and it's not just the bottom end. There is EQ in the upper mids which adds a nice kind of twang to Rutherford's bass, so this is really a question of taste, but it is there.

    I'm happy with my Sonopress but I've lost track of which version I have. Can someone remind me what I have please? :laugh:

    Don't worry, you probably need to buy them ALL again, anyway! :laugh:

    As the owner of Sonopress 2, any chance you can post a clip of the ending of Get `Em Out By Friday so that Raf can determine if the Sanyo Japan and Sonopress 2 really are level-shifted versions of the same mastering?

    Oh pooh! :(

    Schweet. :) I do think this helps to add to what Black Elk (and all of us!) are doing.

    I need to get better at this. I liked the US Atlantic, but I liked the V/C Sanyo Japan better (even though I really wanted to like the US version because I can't stand the cropped V/C covers :) ), and I couldn't even put my finger on why I liked the Sanyo Japan disc better...

    (And, yup, I did miss the info in the older thread about where the Nimbus was identical to the U.S. Atlantic..., the EAC numbers, etc.)

    Hi everyone, I have two Virgin CDs: Genesis S/T and Invisible Touch.

    The EMI Swindon Genesis S/T CD has "Manufactured by EMI" etched into the side of the case cover. The inner ring on the disc reads "786436 5:1:5 EMI Swindon". On the face of the disc it says "Manufactured in the UK" and above that is the numbering "00777 7 8646 2 3" The Catalog number on the case spine is Virgin/Charisma "GEN CD1" If you need anymore info, let me know. OK, so now the Virgin pressing of Invisible Touch, Catalog Number Virgin Records "GEN CD 2" The inner ring reads "786360 2 @ 3" and on another part of the inner ring is some numbers etched into the ring without that "hologram effect" on the previous numbers. That etching is "2-4-6-NL" Above the Compact Disc logo on the disc face, there is the number "0777 7 86360 2 1" and below the CD logo is "BIEM/STEMRA" and "Manufactured in Holland" Here is the EAC log; again any clarification you need just ask.

    Since I posted these, I hope someone has these other copies so we can compare: Target, Vertigo, Atlantic, and alternate V/C for Genesis S/T. And then the Atlantic or an alternate Virgin for Invisible Touch. I'm speculating that for Invisible Touch and beyond, all the CDs will be digitally identical.

    Much to my amusement, I just found the Atlantic Invisible Touch amongst my wife's CDs. Judging by the wavy inserts, I'd say she used to listen to this in the bath!! :) I just tried to open the booklet -- it's welded shut!!! :laugh: I've no idea if it contains a mastering credit.

    Anyway, here's the info:

    Genesis - Invisible Touch - Atlantic 7 81641-2 - WEA Manufacturing
    Matrix = 3 81641-2 SRC=12 ~~~ M2S5 (where ~ is used to denote space)

    99.8 % - 75.7 % - 67.7 % - 80.6 % - 96.1 % - 87.7 % - 78.9 % - 82.5 %

    And while we're at it, here's We Can't Dance too (at least, the first few tracks, the disc has a scratch that EAC can't get passed towards the end):

    Genesis - We Can't Dance - Atlantic 7 82344-2 - WEA Manufacturing
    Matrix = ARC ~~~ 3 82344-2 SRC=05 ~~~ *M4 S3 (and ~ = spaces)

    97.3 % - 97.3 % - 97.3 % - 97.3 % - 97.3 % - 97.3 % - 97.3 % - 97.3 % - 97.2 % (tracks 10 to 12 missing)

    Thanks guys.

    Here's the data for the Virgin Japan issue of S/T which was released around the same time as the DE's. It actually has the same faceplate design as the DE's, so was obviously made to match the them, but I don't believe it was actually remastered like those nor does it have artwork similar to the DE's.
