"Talking Book" did come out in 1972 but it peaked at #3 so isn't eligible for this poll.

"Santana III" went to #1 but came out in 1971. Santana put out "Caravanserai" in 1972 but it only got to #8...

All of these artists bore me, but I'll go with Cat Stevens.

    What's up Doc?

I see, just barely a Tull fan, eh. You can lose the Tull avatar now, but hey, (look out for the hay baler) you are always welcome in Canada, eh doc.

    Bricked in!

Chicago V. That album helped me broaden and challenge my musical tastes a bit. I was a 45rpm kid at the time and just getting into albums.

I picked Honky Chateau, which i probably wouldn't have done at any other time in my life, but in the last 4 or 5 years it's been my most-played Elton album. Just a beautiful work. Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters. Gah! Thick and Exile are hot on its heels.

Gotta go with the Moodies, but Neil and Tull are worthy choices.

I've never actually heard Exile on Main St.. and I couldn't tell you what's on it. No doubt I've heard a track or three here and there. I lost a lot of interest in the Stones when Honky Tonk Women came out and never really regained it.

    Neil Young - Harvest

Of the others I own Exile, Honky Chateau and Chicago V but Neil wins by a distance.

That may be because altghought great albums the others you are thinking of may not have been #1 albums as indicated in the thread title.

my favorite #1 album of 1972 wasn't listed - Big Star's #1 Record. It didn't reach #1, but "#1" is in the title so that counts, right? :)

A lot of great ones, but Seventh Sojourn for me. Thick as a Brick would probably be second.
