I had this narrowed down to 3 - Tapestry, There's A Riot and 4 Way Street - but now add Sticky Fingers to the mix. I really forgot what an excellent album that was.

Now, I am weighing in on 4 albums as my ultimate choice for 1971.

Of course I know that you are kidding with that comment... but just a s a note there are many many great albums that never even made the charts - even way back in 1971.

  4. My vote went to "All Things Must Pass" by George Harrison, but it's in a log jam with a number of other greats.

    Level I:
George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
    John Lennon - Imagine
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - 4 Way Street
    Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
    Carole King - Tapestry
Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story

    Level II:
Sly and the Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin' On
    Janis Joplin - Pearl

    Level III:
    Isaac Hayes - Shaft

    Level IIIa:
    Santana III 5 2.87%

    Level IVa:
Various Artists - Jesus Christ Superstar

"ATMP" narrowly beats "Sticky Fingers", with "Every Picture" 3rd and "Imagine" 4th...

Real tough choice for me between All Things Must Pass and 4 Way Street. I went with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - 4 Way Street.

Every Picture Tells a Story. I did not know before this that Who's Next wasn't a #1 album. I stopped paying attention to chart positions around the same time I stopped listening to AM radio.

It reached #3 in the U.S. and was also certificated platinum - that's pretty good for an album that I believe did not receive much promotion. I have it (as with every single album ever released by Jimi Hendrix) and I love it.

It also reached #2 in the UK.

All of them are great but I find myself going back to Jesus Christ Superstar quite a bit

Sticky Fingers is maybe my favorite Rolling Stones album. It certainly is their best, in terms of energy, muscle, lyrical depth, and musical prowess. Good competition, though, with All Things Must Pass and There's A Riot Goin' On finishing place and show for me, but got to give the nod to the Stones.

Sticky Fingers or Imagine, then ATMP. I'll go with Sticky Fingers.

On this list, I would have a tie with Sticky Fingers and Every Picture Tells A Story with All Things Must Pass coming in a close second.

That being said, if we included UK #1's, I'd easily clear out all contenders with Who's Next.
