According to an interview posted here, yes. He raved about Vlado Meller and his 2 million-dollar equipment, and that they did listening tests in "typical" environments (car) and the hyper-inflated masterings "won", the criteria of which are based on being severely hearing-impaired, I'm guessing.

I wonder how they would respond to a waveform comparison between this CD and a well-done needledrop. Probably the same sort of lemming mentality, but it would be interesting to see the comments. :sigh:

Actually, I'd like to see that. Does anyone have the waveforms from the cd and lp of Highway Companion? I just listened to the cd and really enjoyed the music. The sound is a bit non-dynamic though.

    Hi bdiament and all,

Back in the early days of the craft, this type of mastering would be rejected. More than 4 clipped samples would get your master rejected by the pressing plant! Egad what these sonic assassins are doing to music!

    No. How's the difference? Dramatic?

(In the case of 12 Songs, one of my favourites was the bonus track with Brian Wilson, so that's probably not on the vinyl. Or maybe it is, haven't checked.)

When did this policy apparently change, and WHY?

    Hi,

Apparently this policy went out when the Sony PCM 1600 series began being retired from common use in mastering studios and Sonic Solutions CD master format began being used commonly!

    Hi Kent,

I'm aware of the old rule (though I remember it at 3 clipped samples).

I am happy to say my own standard is 0 clipped samples.
    Always was, always will be.

    Best regards,

    Hi Barry,

Same rules apply here! No clipping allowed!

In other words, it's quantity over quality. Unfortunately, that's the way business is going. Which stinks, of course. However, if people keep accepting the garbage and don't complain and/or stop buying the products, the status quo will remain.

Not up there with RHCP's Stadium Arcadium, but when I took a look at the Dionne Warwick "My Friends & Me" CD that the wife came home with a couple of months ago, I was kinda surprised. The shot of a whole track doesn't look too bad, but zoom in, and  ! Looks ugly, sounds ugly too.

I can't understand the need for compression on this type of music, but allowing this type of limiting to occur is just plain stupid. Can you even call this limiting? Gee, I've been looking for a job for a while now, maybe Concord Music Group up in Beverly Hills could use some of my producing/engineering expertise.

I have not tried Cash - V yet but I would guess that it is much better than the CD. You cannot maximize vinyl as you can with CD.
Maybe some that have the vinyl could do some picture from it?

Man... The only thing that makes it not sound as bad as it looks is that being a Death Metal song, everything is so loud and distorted anyway, that you can't really notice all the clipping. Though there is a little part where the drums, bass, and some of the guitar tracks drop out for a few seconds at ~0:55 - 0:58 where you can hear all sorts of crackling behind the vocals.

That little part at 1:36 - 1:38 is a few spots where just the guitar is playing, lol.

Careful... The same thing could be said for virtually any genre of music.

Just because you don't like it doesn't make it somehow "inferior"

This is correct. People have varied tastes. There may even be people here on SH.tv that listen to it.
