    Hi phish,

Are you saying the vinyl for "Rebel Music" says I mastered it?
    If so, it is wrong.
If my name is there, I'd suspect they may have used the CD master I created when cutting the vinyl but I did not master the vinyl.

    Best regards,
    Barry

90125 mastering is credited to the WCI Group but it was explained to me that was just a go-between for the labels and manufacturers and not a place that actually pre-mastered the albums.

BTW, 90125 is perfect. I don't care if it's from an EQ'd tape, it sounds amazing.

re: Dokken - Breaking The Chains (CD, Album) Elektra

Was this ever remastered? I ask because my Elektra CD (credited to Barry) has quite a bit of clipping during tracks. Very different from 'Under Lock And Key'. A lot louder, also.

    Hi Brian81,

From your description, it sounds like it was re-mastered but the artwork not updated. Clipped and loud doesn't sound like something I'd have done.

    Hi Jamie,

    Thanks.

As to "WCI Group", many of the first Atlantic CDs were done out at Warner Brothers in LA by Joe Sidore. These are the ones that should have been credited WCI Group.
Actually, I believe they should have been credited to Joe Sidore but in any event, most of the ones he did said "WCI Group" so that is what those words can be taken to mean.

A memory cell just flashed. There was another Yes CD I believe I might have done. Was the album called "Drama"? I remember a refrain where they sang "I am a camera". I think the song was "Into the Lens"?

    Jamie,

Remember, back in the day, EQ tapes were created mainly because the engineer thought the music sounded the best that way. I've come across many, many EQ dubs that sound so good when I get the original tape I follow the instructions and master it the exact same way. Some EQ dubs really rock.

  9. Hi Barry, Do you know if it was Joe Sidore who mastered the 'Pretenders S/T' target CD?

    Thanks.

Robert Palmer's Riptide. Fantastic album, fantastic sound. Barry i was wondering if you could also shed some light on something. In the CD booklet it says that the album is a full digital recording and yet on the back of the CD case it states "The music on this compact disc was recorded on analog equipment, we have...". Do you remember if it was indeed a digital recording. I've always wondered if it was since this is the only CD i have come across where it states a DDD recording but has the well known "This compact disc was recorded on analog equipment...". Thanks in advance!

  11. Which 90125 are you referring to Jamie? The original non-remastered CD?

If so, I believe I've seen Barry post that while they use the same mastering, the West Germany target, the Japan for U.S., and the U.S. for U.S. do not sound the same, with the Japan for U.S. being the lesser of the three.

    Hi phish,

As I said, they may have used the CD master I created as the source, instead of the original analogs- if they wanted to try and match the sound I got on the CD.

    Hi Scott,

If that is the first Pretenders album you're talking about, I don't know for sure but would bet it was Joe.

    Hi jv66,

I believe "Riptide" was recorded on analog tape but the "mixes" I was given were, if memory serves, on a 3/4" digital U-matic tape (the same format we used to create CD masters in those days). This is the format I got most Genesis tapes in as well. And Island first sent me the Marleys this way too. Happily, when I called them to say the CDs I was about to make were what folks would be listening to for years to come and what were they saving the masters for, Island responded by overnighting me the original mixes.

The statement on the back of "Riptide", "The music on this Compact Disc..." was probably put on automatically by the art department. Just as with the mastering credit, ultimately, it is a coincidence if it is correct.

In those days, the statement on the back was used in my view, as a CYA to "explain" why the "perfect" sound wasn't perfect.
The other statement, the "DDD", was an effort to say it was "perfect".

    Best regards,
    Barry

And they do this by blaming it on the analog link in the chain? Weird. I never understood that 'warning'.

    Hi Barry,

I was wondering how your own recordings are going and is there any way of getting my hands on something you've done recently?

I've been influenced by your (2 mic) recording techniques that you told me about months ago. I have used that method with vocal overdubs but not with a whole song. I wanted to ask you: since I'm all analog, do you think that changing the recording levels makes any difference when moving something farther away from the mic? In my case I'm going to get more hiss if I don't pump it up.
I still haven't had a chance to hear your schtuff but I think about it quite often when I'm taping. I tend to roughly follow the idea when I can.

Peace Love and Diament in the rough:D
