So that means you did the mastering of the first Elektra CD of the Cure. Very fine I'm still succeeding to get 'your' cds over here by means of a research through amazon.com and a kind of gambling before ordering. Two days ago I got your 'Physical Graffity' of Led Zep. What a difference in sound with later remasterings! For just $2 (well, and some mail costs) I arrived in aural heaven. Really thanks for your good help!
Hi Barry I happened to notice that you are credited with sequencing and formatting Dave Grusin 'Mountain Dance' on the GRP Records label. Mastering is credited to Ted Jensen. Were you involved in assisting the GRP Records team from time to time? Thanks
I second that. Without specific catalog numbers or other guidelines, the list is of limited use, especially when plowing through racks of used CDs with different editions of same titles.
.. or you can buy from the classifieds here, where we try to identify such things... Sometimes the catalog number doesn't change....
Barry ran the original mastering department at Atlantic back in the day, so if you go for the original Atlantic (or related WEA label such as Island) pressings on most of the list, then you will be off to a good start. The Marley catalog is the '90 reissue on Tuff Gong. Some of us like to collect first or early pressings, but I'm not sure that matters to many people. An example might be Grace Jones 'Island Life'. I have the JVC Japan for US pressing (Island 90491-2). Of course, there will likely be more common US pressings with the same catalog#. Perhaps there is a foreign release that used Barry's mastering that I'd like also. In this instance, I have Cinram Canada 842 453-2, but I haven't yet compared to determine if it is exactly the same.

Can someone clear up the Ac Dc cd's for me ?? allright i see what i think are the originals used ins stores , all the remasters come in the Digipacks right ?? I own one of those & we all know how awfull those sound ... The older one's i am seeing say "mastered by Ted jensen" & others say "George marino" ..... are there different older masterings & will some actually have Barry's name on them ? Thanks for the info .
The ones that say "mastered by Ted Jensen" or "mastered by George Marino" but are also in a jewel case with the Atco or Atlantic imprint are remasters from the early 90s. The remasters in the Digipaks are the second round of remasters from Epic/Sony in 2003. The ones mastered by Barry (at least the US copies, I think) all have that old "The music on this Compact Disc was originally recorded on analog equipment..." disclaimer on the back tray insert. His name is on or in the booklets for Dirty Deeds, If You Want Blood, High Voltage, and Who Made Who. His name won't be found at all on Highway To Hell, Back In Black, and For Those About To Rock. The catalog numbers for the Barry-mastered discs I have are High Voltage--Atco 36-142-2 Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap--Atlantic 16033-2 If You Want Blood You've Got It--Atlantic SD 19212-2 Highway To Hell--Atlantic SD 19244-2 (Europe: 050 628) Back In Black--Atlantic 16018-2 (Europe: 050 735) For Those About To Rock We Salute You--Atlantic SD 11111-2 (Europe: 050 851) Who Made Who--Atlantic 7 81650-2 Crank these discs up when you track them down!
I sent a copy of this to Barry and he confirmed it was his mastering. Just find CDs which match this one. http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost.php?p=3496393&postcount=9. Genesis - A Trick Of The Tail - 32VD-1023 (Japan)
I forgot to mention that I'd also be interested in similar information for Let There Be Rock, since the only CD copy I have is the early 90s remaster...
I just checked all of mine and they all have that written on the back. That blurb is like the SHMF mantra. We should make T-shirts with that written on the front.
Hi jh901, "Sequencing and formatting"? They left out a good bit of editing. Yes, I edited (then sequenced and formatted) a good number of GRP projects back then. Best regards, Barry www.soundkeeperrecordings.com www.barrydiamentaudio.com
Thanks Barry! Is the editing, sequencing and formatting completely separate from the parts of the process that result in good sound quality? I was under the impression that Jensen's role would disqualify Mountain Dance, and perhaps any title in the GRP catalog, from mention in the list maintained in this thread.
My pleasure Good luck in finding these gems! The worst that can happen with the older masterings is that you now have a nice baseline comparison with a newer mastering

Hi jh901, Unless the editing, sequencing and formatting is poorly done, it should have no impact on sound quality. These affect the artistic presentation but not the sonic presentation (which of course, also contributes -or doesn't- to the artistic presentation). You are correct: I did not master those recordings, so they shouldn't be on a list of albums I mastered. Best regards, Barry www.soundkeeperrecordings.com www.barrydiamentaudio.com
Markus Schwartz & Lakou Brooklyn - Equinox* (Soundkeeper Recordings - SR4002) Work Of Art - Lift* (Soundkeeper Recordings - SR4001) With regard to Soundkeeper Recordings catalog numbers, the 4000 series (e.g. SR4002 and SR4001) represent only the 24/96 music DVD version on DVD-V. There are versions in several other formats, from CD (1000 series) to CD-R (2000 series) to high res files on disc for music servers (6000 and 8000 series). The first number denotes the format. The last three are the release number. So, Equinox is really SR002 and Lift is really SR001. Thanks. Best regards, Barry www.soundkeeperrecordings.com www.barrydiamentaudio.com
