Pictures at an Exhibition is an album by British progressive rock band Emerson Lake & Palmer, released in 1971 as a live album and now re-released as a remastered edition including both the original live album and an unreleased verion from the Lyceum concert of December 9, 1970 of Mussorgsky's classical piece Pictures at an Exhibition. The original live album was recorded at Newcastle City Hall in North East England. The opening track of the album was played on a Harrison & Harrison pipe organ which was installed in the City Hall in 1928. This remastered edition features an expanded booklet with extensive notes and interviews with the band. The bonus second disc of the Lyceum concert also includes live performances of Knife Edge, The Barbarian and Rondo.

So, for me it's not quite worth getting the 2 CD version :shake:

I have the From The Beginning 5 CD + 1 DVD boxset. The last 3 songs are The Barbarian, Knife Edge & Rondo from London 09/12/1970 :)

I don't care about Nutrocker. IMHO, the 1971 version (already released on CD) is better than the DVD one from 1970. I haven't heard the Isle Of Wight meddley 1970 though

Brain Salad Surgery is my least favorite ELP album, but it is regarded as the groups masterpeice. I just wished that the drums were a little more in the mix

It's my favorite ELP by far, and I wish the drums were a LOT more in the mix.

IMHO, Love Beach is crap, sure. But it's still a lot better than Black Moon or Hot Seat :thumbsdn:

  7. Even Love Beach has at least one great tune on it, which for me is "Canario" :)

As for the later disks, the only song I liked on either disk was "Romeo and Juliet"

And count me as one who considers BSS their peak.:righton:

    I'm a Tarkus man, myself.

But it's hard to not acknowledge BSS as the masterwork.

Hoping this SACD will have a definitive 2-ch hi-res layer.

    Then do Tarkus... :D

I agree. But only because of "Karn Evil 9." I don't like Jerusalem or Toccata, and the two after are just okay.

It's not my absolute favorite either, but not my least. In any case, I always found the drum sound on this to be too tinny. Seems to me the snare is mic'd beneath the snare rather than over, so you get too much of that snare ring and no attack. Blech.

Anyone happen to know who did the mastering on this new release?

I've always loved BBS but Trilogy was also a great album.

    We need Trilogy in surround!

K.D. Lang's Invincible Summer is also without a stereo layer despite it being labeled as having one on the back insert. I just found this out last week when I found a NM copy for $10 at my local store. It is the first pressing that comes in a standard CD jewel case. The DVD-A layer is only MLP 5.1 while the DVD-V layer is only DD 5.1. A real shame IMO.

The Lyceum disc is a new mix from the original, badly recorded 8-track tapes by Pachal Byrne, who is also responsible for the remastering work for the original album.

I hope the new BSS edition uses Paschal's mastering, as his work on the recent box set was very good.

In Stock at amazon.co.uk and mine is in "shipping soon" status.

But would you believe they increased the price on my pre-order. Until today it was £12.76 and now they've changed the price on my order to £14.98. I doubt it if that's even legal. I've sent them an email about it.

usually the price promise means you get it at the lowest price through the pre order period. Its worked for me in the past it would seem strange though..

Well the copy I ordered here in the US from CD Universe is now "Backordered." Which means it'll be weeks before I see my copy - if at all. I hate these games.
