Thank you gentlemen. $68 beans, and I already rec'd a DCC Gold, and another UDCD (Japan MFSL for you newbies) earlier this week from the same eBayer...some collector who had only the best and REALLY took care of them apparently passed on...sad, but...hey ...you CAN'T take 'em with you. The seller is an executor of this guy's estate.
Is this one recorded at a low level,( Supertramp UDCD 505 Crime),as I have to turn my input waaay up when playing this disc! Thanks,Huck
You $0.02 is right on IMO Roland. If you were lucky enough to have picked up the MFSL Second Helping back in the day you probably do not need the AF. But if the Ultradisc has eluded you and the price is too steep the AF is the way to go. But us collectors, we need both.
I LOVE this MFSL. It has a clarity and transparens in sound that is simply amazing for an 80's CD. If Universal could copy this sound into an SHM-SACD, then we would have the Ultimate Crime of the century.
I think the MFSL is the ultimate Crime of the Century disc, what can be improved on it? Yes you have to turn it up but it is one of the best sounding discs I have ever heard (CD,SACD any other format). That drum sound on Hide in Your Shell really caught me by surprise when I bought it the week of release.
The MFSL mastering in 24/192 would be better, but what you will get with a newly released SACD, etc is hi-res with inferior mastering work. I don't care what the resolution is if the mastering is underwhelming. The mastering work has the biggest impact on the sound quality. If we take a Barry Diament quality mastering that is done in 24/192, then you are talking about the pinnacle of digital sound quality.
Possible forum banner: The mastering work has the biggest impact on the sound quality. Everyone must agree: The mastering work has the biggest impact on the sound quality.
I thought the recording and mixing had the biggest impact - maybe that's the same as the "production"?
God, we're talking about the impact after the recording is made, regardless of the original quality of the recording. Yeah, and it's tough to polish a turd.
Back on track? The mastering of these two recordings makes them my two favourite Tull MFSL's. http://s1015.photobucket.com/albums/af278/tootull/?action=view¤t=IMG-1.jpg
