I'm curious about this one as well, as I don't own the MFSL gold disc.

Dave told me months ago that my Made In Japan MFSL Gold (1992) was the big winner in shootouts he had done. :agree:

I prefer it. Just has that little bit of extra clarity ... that's the best way I can put it. It is very similar to the first pressing Virgin/Atlantic Records CD, which is also very good.

I love THAT'S THE WAY IT IS. MFSL did a GREAT job on that one.

Mike is right, but I haven't heard the AF yet. All I currently know is this particular MFSL is one of my 10 desert island discs.

I found the MFSL to have a more realistic and less strident presentation.

I own both and I would stay with the MFSL if I were you. <edit>

Any thoughts on Robbie Robertson's self-titled debut solo album?

Enjoying the overdubbed applause on the studio version of Bridge Over Troubled Water?

I prefer another that sounds better. If you have it try and find a reasonably priced Japan 32XD-786 pressing to compare and let us know your results.

Dave, question for you: On this title (Robertson)... did you ever hear the stock Geffen CD for North America, and do you remember if you preferred that one to the MFSL?

Yes the original Geffen USA that sounds less realistic, a bit veiled and a bit pinched. Between these two I hung onto the MFSL until I tried the Japan CD.

Thanks, Barry. I need to hear the MFSL gold disc.

  14. I have both the MFSL and the AF of "Second Helping". I just compared them again.

Overall, they sound quite similar. The tonality is close and volume wise, they are also about even. The AF seems to have a tad more midrange, the MFSL sounds a tad rounder/warmer/more laid back. Not a very big difference in my opinion, both sound good to me.

I noticed towards the end of the album (maybe it was the side 2 of the original album) where the differences seem to get a little bit larger, and the MFSL came out ahead a little bit on those tracks. On the first half it is closer, but I would probably still give the MFSL a tiny advantage.

If you have the MFSL, I don't think you really need the new AF (unless you want to have it for your collection or if you are so curious to find out for yourself). If you don't have either one, buy the AF (it's reasonable priced and sounds better than the other versions out there besides the MFSL). Finding the MFSL might take a little while and/or money.

If this is one of your favorite albums and/or you must own the absolute best version for each album you like, try to find the MFSL and see if you also like it better than the MFSL.

Some might be attracted to the slightly cleaner sound of the AF. Some of the treble seems to be a bit better defined/cleaner (I don't mean necessarily brighter, just different sounding).

I'll keep both versions. Who knows, maybe one day, with a change in my stereo system, I might prefer the other version.

Just my $0.02 as an additional comment.

Good valid point...price and availability. I paid $75.00 2 years ago, and the AF is a helluva lot less than that, and easier to come by. :agree:

I remember when I was in college, this was misstickered at Record Bar as a stock RCA version, so I got it new for something like $17.99.

Thank you for that. I also felt that the MFSL was a step up from the US Geffen. :)

Oh yes. A definite winner. One of those rip-out-of-my-cold-dead-hands discs.
