OK! I have have been looking everywhere for this article and I can't find it. This much I do remember about the piece,
Somebody here on the SH forums posted a link to this article maybe 1 to 2 years ago. The article was an interview with maybe Stan Ricker, Shawn Britton or another MFSL guy talking about MFSL and it's mastering history. I also remember that there was a lot of discussion in the article about the early West German Rolling Stones Cd's and how they were issued with MFSL mastering credits and were not supposed too be. Along with this, they mention some other mastering work that they did do that was uncredited, like the early Chrysalis Cd's of some artists like Trower and Tull. This was a fairly lengthy article.
I'm sorry that I can't provide a link to this article but will continue to look and hopefully will find it or someone else will be able to post a link to the article.

    I swear I'm not crazy!!! :D

Three posts and I don't see anything from you re Dave using hyperbole to praise one excellent mastering at the expense of another excellent one. That was my point. And I posted a response to you to clarify. Orig. Chrysalis does not blow the Mofi out of the water. No sensible audiophile would say that (Scott, Roland, me, for starters). Preferences is one thing, ridiculous hyperbole is another. That doesn't help 'newcomers', does it? Have you heard the two pressings? No mention that you have, or what your thoughts are.

As for 'resolving'...let's just say I can hear the crackle on AF Morrison Hotel.

  3. Dude , you harbor more anger than even I do about this crap. At least the "hyperbole" in question was over 2 good sounding CD's and not some brand new crappy squashed mini-lp or shm snake-oil. There are a couple of members here, I think we all know 1 of them pretty well, that seem to chime in on any thread saying how amazing their expensive limited mini-lp sounds - now that's something that does not help new members, what it does do is madoff them out of their hard earned cash. Yet they never get called on their hyperbole by those such as yourself - Why not I ask?

I have both of these and they sound totally different. Steve's, has more midrange and bass. The MFSL is brighter but not in a bad way. Both sound good.

I wish AP Could've gotten the CD rights.

The MoFi is good. The Gastwirt is good too. Anyone who is looking at getting the 'best' version should check out both of these CDs. The MoFi is brighter and louder which may not interest some people. The Gastwirt may hit you as closers to what Steve did.

I did a test: Steve's Fragile sounds great but I prefer the highs on the MFSL and prefer the bass on the LP. ALways dicey to do two format comparos though since my CD player and/or turntable may not represent the best of either format. Still they are pretty decent. Check my profile. :)

This is a complete generalization but I find that Steve's work has a smoother top end which I think most here prefer. It's almost warm in some ways. I think MFSL is maybe the opposite as they have a bit more clarity up top but it may be more analytical in some ways.

Two flavors of a premium icecream. The choice is yours.

I'm not angry. Bold-face text was intended to emphasize my point, not vent anger. I'm simply contesting someone's opinion on this thread, an opinion I don't think any sensible audiophile would share. What is wrong with the Mofi? Compressed, wonky EQ, not sourced from master? Is it really so inferior to orig. Chrysalis? A hack-job vis-a-vis first pressing, as I can only infer from the stated opinion? I'm not against using hyperbole where it is merited: Audio Fidelity Hell Bent for Leather trounces/ridicules/blows of water 2002 Sony remaster. Agreed?

Re SHM/mini-LP, I have only heard two mini-LP's and 0 SHM discs, so I can't comment.

Seeing as you asked... the MFSL is either sourced using a digitally sourced file that sounds very digital [ie: a sense of artificiality with hardness across the sound spectrum and no life and imaging] or they are somehow adjusting the equalization to sound like this. Either way the Chrysalis gives a much more relaxed and natural real life presentation no matter what its source is.

So how does that Audio Fidelity Hell Bent For Leather stand up against the USA Columbia or Japanese 1st pressing at loud volumes? I'm certain it beats that compressathon Sony remonster.

Re Hell Bent, I have not heard the Columbia in a long time (like 15 years), so I can't say. A fave title, but minty WLP and AF gold are all I need. The Sony is a compressathan remonster, no doubt, one of the worst CD's I've ever heard. I don't think the gulf between the Hell Bent pressings and the two Bridge of Sighs are anywhere near similar, however. And that was my point. Very few would be disappointed with the Mofi. Whichever mastering one prefers, I don't think one is exceptional and the other a, erm, drink coaster.

Try finding a link to prove it? :D

The original Jethro Tull Chrysalis CD's were done by MFSL's Gregg Schnitzer.

That's the million dollar question. I would love to be more specific.
ChristianL provided this link in 2005 to the quote: "I mastered all of the Chrysalis Jethro Tull CDs "

Interesting and thanks. It kind of makes sense why some of these VK, CPD and CCD pressings sound so good.

Honestly Paul, I think good sounding pressings may exist for all original run pressings/albums no matter what country.

Read above. The only Japanese Tull I own is Crest Of A Knave and a Japan for UK/Europe of Minstrel In The Gallery. The rest are UK and USA 1st pressings because... they sound the best to me. ;)
