That's what I thought about you when you were singing it accompanying yourself with a lute... You know, Dowland style. :)

Cool...I am a little surprised. I was not aware that you like Rach's non piano stuff. It gets a bad rap now and then!

A great Second Symphony. I must have at least twenty of them.

The only one I have is Previn/Royal Philharmonic. If that's one you know or have, what's different about the interpretation of your fave? (Might be hard to answer off the bat if you have 20 of 'em spinning around in your head, though).

My Previn is the LSO. I didn't know he recorded it twice until I looked it up in a guidebook. Seems the guidebook prefers the one that I have.

Guess he wanted to do it in that "Telarc" sound (which does sound terrific).

One huge difference is of course tempos. Most of the more recent recordings are around the same...brisker tempos, so I have slowed down buying them.
The versions also come into play. Too many with cuts on many recordings.

The Previn/RPO is one of my favorites. My top three are -

    Yep. That it be.

George, are you a fan of Rach's 3 as is RRB? I just checked and don't seem to have it on the rack.

Both of them are top notch. The strings on the RPO recording are to die for even better than the LSO if you can believe that.

I probably wouldn't have got it if I hadn't bought complete sets, but yes, I do enjoy it, as I enjoy the first. Is the Ormandy set still OOP? If not, that's the one I'd suggest.

I just read a complaint over at amazon that the RPO violins were colorless. However, I'll trust your ears over some anonymous person at amazon.

Looks like the set (sony) is still around over at Amazon. Very little available for No.3 as a single disc...

Beethoven Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92, arr. for nine-part Harmonie

According to Accent Records, LvB did arrange it for wind nonet. Here is the only recording of this nonet version, recorded 1984 in Belgium: http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=83998

    I found another on Amazon.

    http://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Octet-Op-103-Quintet-Symphony/dp/B000000AZH

One of the reviewers claims there is no basis for assuming that Beethoven did the arrangement, which is why I had some doubts.

(By the way, despite the opus number, the octet is a very early work.)

Any know the differences between these two records? i picked up the second one for the cover but the record is uselessly noisy, sounds pretty cool (I dont know much about classical) so would like to get the same record.

is the first one (red cover) the same music as the second link (two faces cover)? seems to more available and cheaper

I wonder why my 300+ unplayed CD's never seem to go down even when I try to have as many first listens as I can ...
