    listening to HvK atm.
Mahler - Das Lied Von Der Erde.
Speaking of HvK. He is just in a league of his own.
Last night I compared Schubert's 9th Symphony The Great C-Dur ny Sir Charles Mackerras on SIGNUM, which I always liked a lot with a 78 quadrophonic DG LP reading of Berlin Strings and HvKand this is so much better, the orchestra has more dribe, vereve and a much better tone, the music is way more structured.
    I
Bext on the list HvK's CARMEN on Red Seal Classics..

I have Otto and Walter, but I have yet to compare them. Haven't even heard the Walter and should remedy that soon.

I have the Walter from 1960, with Miller and Hafliger. Have you heard that one?

Yes, I am playing it now and noticed the sound right away. It's a first Japanese pressing too.

Was walking through Washington Square Park Today (it was about 30 degrees Fahrenheit) and a pianist was playing an upright Baldwin piano near the center of the park. Right there out in the sun, amongst the snowbanks - what a trooper! I took a few pictures and a video on my cheap phone and thought I'd share it with you guys. The sound isn't so great (downright historical sounding), nor is the picture, but it's the thought that counts, right?

That's excellent! What a pleasant surprise. I love Debussy. It sounds as if he was pretty good, no? Had he brought the piano out there himself? I think I remember reading a couple years ago or so that someone had put out a number of pianos in NYC for anyone to play.

I'm impressed frankly that anyone can do anything requiring finger dexterity, let alone play the piano, in that kind of temperature. After five minutes outside at 30 degrees without mittens I probably couldn't even tie my shoelaces.

Thanks. Yes, it is relatively scarce.
It is one of the Mohr - Layton efforts and sounds great.

Yes, in the past he told me that he often abbreviates longer works to accommodate the poor attention span of the public. He often embellishes and "pumps" up works as well. Today he played Chopin, Debussy, Coldplay (Clocks) and Rachmaninoff while I was there.

Yes, he did. It was balanced on two dollies. he rolls it out from a nearby storage space.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised the first time I saw him out there in warm weather. But when I saw him out there in the snow I was blown away. The sun helps a LOT, I think when performing outdoors. I often sit in the sun in the winter time and sing in the parks. It's a lot of fun, at least until the sun goes doewn or the clouds roll in.

Must have been some other Baritone, as I don't ever sing for money. :)

Why didn't you give it back then??

More seriously, what is it you might sing in the park?

Too wrapped up in the moment, as I often am when I sing. It's one of the best things about singing, I find.

I don't know the Third as well, though the Second is a favorite; I have several recordings but almost always listen to Sanderling's on DG.
