  13. Those are the nicest CD's I've ever seen! I love that layout - it looks simple yet somehow distinguished. I wish they hadn't screwed up CD's so badly over the last 15 years. Once upon a time they were the be all, end all (unless you were a TOTL Audiophile) and they were (almost) all good

Here's a few that we seem to be missing. Sorry about the crap on the scanner. My kids use this most of the time. I can't seem to get the rest to load. Someone else is going to have to do the heavy listing. Anyway, here are two of the first 50 released on October 1, 1982. Simon & Garfunkel Collection 35DP-14 and Herbie Hancock Trio 38DP-17. Both are gold face first prints.

I just want to say this is one of my favorite threads ever here. I love seeing all the pictures. More please! :)

Here's one of my favorites. Not only is it the only gold-tinted disc I own so far, but the case has a single, long bar stopper.

I hope this question is still basically on-topic, as I didn't think it was worth starting a new thread.

I recently discovered that my 35DP-24 of ELO's Discovery has a barcode in the disc's matrix area. I was under the impression that these barcodes didn't start to appear until after the 32DP series was already underway.

I didn't think that later pressings of any 35DP titles would retain either the 35DP catalog number or the ¾-Black Face design, yet I suspect that's the story with my copy. For the record, the matrix reads 35DP-24 51A5 ++++

My only guess is that for some reason, this title remained a 35DP for much longer than most, to the point where they even retained the label design into later pressings. This seems plausible to me because of the 51A5 in the matrix, even though I'm not aware of this being the case with any other ¾-Black Faces.

Anyone know what the deal is?

This phenomenon occurs on other 35DP titles as well (but I'm not sure how many). As you've suggested, it signifies a later pressing.

Well, whaddya know? I never knew that any of those 35DPs stayed around long enough to have later pressings with the "barcode" manufacturing equipment. (Not while still being 35DPs, that is, of course.)

    Thanks for the info. :righton:

The History of CD thread had speculation that some/most of the early Japan CDs had a two-year production run. Implicit there is that some didn't!

I sure hope that those late-issue, barcode-matrix CDs have the same mastering. Does your Discovery have pre-emphasis?
