Nice list Chris. I have enough of those to fill in some blanks. Piper Box and Sun Years have been played a ton, on my end. The Pillbugs new CD sounds incredible too.

I bought this and sounds great, as well. The Doobie Brothers - Minute By Minute (Audio Fidelity 24K Gold Disc)

Really? I was listening to this earlier this week, and it was definitely a lot harsher sounding to me (a -11db on ReplayGain) than Death By Sexy and their first album (which I think sounds great).

I have not looked at the waveform, however.

There's only two engineers that I am aware of who still produce dynamic sounding CD's with no sign of digital mastering compression since 2000. They would be our own Steve and Barry Diament.

What about Greg Calbi and Marc Wilder? And Bernie Grundman?

  7. Vic Anesini mastered my favourite reissues of this year:

Roy Orbison - The soul of rock and roll
Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean blue
    Laura Nyro - Nested
Laura Nyro - Season of lights

Also hats off for Doug Sax, as Shelby Lynne's Just a little lovin' sounds brilliant.

I would have once put Bernie on the goodie list, but then he did this one. The more I listen, the more it hurts.

To my ears, I felt the Marshall Tucker remasters had the life sucked out of them. I can't listen to them.

The CD remaster of Teena Marie's "It Must be Magic" album on Motown. No compression at all!

No limiting, brickwalling or Digital Compression during mastering on any of these:

    Allan Holdsworth - Road Games
1st CD issue on Gnarly Geezer label from 2002 IIRC.

The Alan Parsons Project HDAD's, some of the best sounding digital media ever. All from 2005:
    I Robot
    Turn Of Friendly Card
    Eye In The Sky

Sadly these are exceptions to the rule.....

Add Doug Sax, Steve's favorite engineer. Although I'm not sure of how much he's put out since '00.

You're welcome. The levels on the Gnarly Geezer CD are lower than even my old Road Games needledrop. I was shocked; given that All Night Wrong (2002), Then! (2003) and most of Against The Clock (2005) are drenched in Digital Compression, as a result all of them are un-listenable to me.

I just got this year's The Excitement Plan by Todd Snider. On first listen in the car it sounded significantly more open than any new CD I remember buying in the past 10+ years. It was mixed and mastered by Krish Harma, who is unfamiliar to me. Tonight when I ripped it EAC I saw the following Peak Levels:
    Track 1 - Peak level 51.3 %
    Track 2 - Peak level 61.8 %
    Track 3 - Peak level 50.6 %
    Track 4 - Peak level 59.9 %
    Track 5 - Peak level 65.5 %
    Track 6 - Peak level 44.1 %
    Track 7 - Peak level 42.2 %
    Track 8 - Peak level 51.5 %
    Track 9 - Peak level 45.4 %
    Track 10 - Peak level 74.8 %
    Track 11 - Peak level 63.3 %
    Track 12 - Peak level 65.4 %

BTW, the album is VERY good.

fmfxray373 Capitol LPs in the 70s were pretty good.

I have always felt that the 3oth Anniversary CD remaster of All Things Must Pass is an excellent sounding cd

I think it sounds pretty nice compared to the previous edition...maybe its me.

I have never even heard it, but I will say that many forum members here have said that this is a terrible sounding CD, drenched in NR. In fact, I would go so far to say that it is one of the least highly regarded (to say the least) CD remasters of the past 10 years. Now I'm (almost) curious to hear it.
