Thanks again for the Mac. Well, without looking over all of your findings, I see that Who Made Who was released in May of 1986. U2's The Joshua Tree was released in March of 1987 and I have a 1st generation SRC pressing of that. So to me, that says that there had to be a 1st gen SRC pressing of Who Made Who, unless they were using other plants strictly during that time (West Germany plants, Japan plants, DADC, etc.) for that title. I don't really know how that 'question' could ever be answered though, as people are finding obscure pressings of CD's here and there that most never thought had existed. Hah...who made who?:shh::biglaugh::love:

  4. Hi SecondHandNews,

Your scenario is absolutely right. It is possible that "Who Made Who" was, initially, pressed in Japan or W. Germany. Therefore, making my Second Generation disc a first pressing from SRC. It is also possible that someone else in the U.S. may have done the initial pressings before SRC created their own glass master. The only way we'll ever know if there was a 1st. Generation pressing of this disc from SRC is if someone reading this thread has it and speaks up about it. That's one of the reasons I'm hoping more people will begin listing their SRC-01 and SRC-01 M1S1 pressings....so that we can learn just what is out there waiting to be discovered!

It is also possible that the release date that I have for "Who Made Who" is actually the release date for the lp and that the cd may have been released much later. This was still common at this time if I recall correctly.

Finding accurate release dates for many of these discs from the '80's isn't easy and the reliability of the available information is sometimes questionable.

Another question that comes to mind is: Is it possible that your U2 disc is available as a 2nd Generation SRC-01 or even a 3rd Generation SRC-01 M1 S1 pressing? Or would the manufacturing process have worn out the first glass master during the original 1st. Generation pressings of these discs?

This question could really be asked about any of the SRC-01 pressings no matter what Generation they are.

I didn't start posting about this stuff because I had all the answers.....Far from it! I started posting about these pressings because I have so many questions!

....and, hopefully, as a result we'll be able to turn up some of those obscure pressings and learn something from them!

You might be right. I just assumed that once CD's were out, new releases were released on CD when they came out. So, I assumed that since Who Made Who came out in 1986 that it would have been released on all 3 mediums on the same day. I of course could be wrong though. And by the way, I'm totally with you about finding out all this information (but you knew that). It is very very interesting.:):)

  6. Found one more in the bins this afternoon:

    6th. Generation:
Fred Hersch Plays Billy Strayhorn - Passion Flower
    Nonesuch
    Matrix: 2 79395-2 SRC##01 M1S1
    Release Date: 1-23-96

I don't know why a release on the Nonesuch label would be given the Label Identification Code for Electra (2) in the matrix. Any thoughts out there?

I can answer that one. Elektra/Asylum/Nonesuch were all kind of together (so these titles would have 2's). Just as a Reprise disc would have a 1 (like a Warner Bros. title would); and just like a Sire title would have a 1; and just like an Atco title would have a 3 (like an Atlantic title would).:righton:

I suppose that could be the case but I have SRCs that have double digits in both the "M" and the "S"

  14. Yeah, you've stumped me on this one. I've seen many discs with double digit Glass Master numbers but never one like this. The first time you entered one of these in, I thought you made a mistake.

    Maybe it means 100?

Almost assuredly no, because it usually, though not exclusively, appears on promos. I'm wondering if the "M0" was something that was originally manufactured as a promo, then possibly "leftovers" that did not have an exclusive promo tracklisting were then shipped to be sold retail (something not unheard of in the world of vinyl). Or, they could be something akin to a vinyl test-pressing. These are only guesses, however.

I distinctly remember a heated debate here where I was told there was no such thing as a CD "test-pressing" even though I own some. I can not find the thread now - I fear it was sent down the memory hole. Too bad, because it might have shed some light on this. If anyone else can find it, perhaps it has some info that can help...?

  18. Hi PlusMinus,

    Nice Find!:righton:

Hey, is it okay if I call you +- for short?:D

  19. This is just purely a guess....but could it mean that the Stamper was made directly from the Glass Master? In other words, there was no Father or Mother made and that is why the Mother is listed as 0. Isn't this what JVC does with their XRCD24 series?

I wonder if this is the case especially since this seems to be appearing mostly on promo discs....

Again, I'm just taking a wild guess about this!

It was pressed under license from Play It Again Sam Records on the Mute Records label in 1992, which was at the time being manufactured in the US by WEA. So, I think you're right! It seems to be related with with Mute Records, or maybe artists of the "electronic" genre. Another user, Surfin Jesus posted a list of their SRC CDs and included an Einstürzende Neubauten CD also on Mute which included the HV prefix.

Does anyone else have US Mute Records CDs that can help to verify?

  23. I've been focusing on other parts of my collection lately, but I came across this while I was digging in the bins of one of my local stores today:

    1st. Generation:
    Van Halen - Fair Warning
    Warner Bros.
    Matrix: 3540-2 SRC-01
    Release Date: unknown

  24. Found a couple more SRC-01 M1S1 pressings this weekend:

    David Sanborn - Love Songs
    Warner Bros.
    Matrix: 1 46002-2 SRC##01 M1S1
    Release Date: Nov. 14, 1995

This was the best information I had on 5th. Generation pressings at the time that I really started collecting these M1S1 pressings from SRC:

I found this disc that now redefines the end-date for 5th. Generation pressings:

    6th. Generation:
    Ornette On Tenor
Rhino (Rhino Presents Atlantic Jazz Gallery)
    Matrix: 3 R2 71455-2 SRC**01 M1S1
    Release Date: Nov. 16, 1993

So, now we know that the 5th. generations discs ceased production by November 15th., 1993, if not sooner.

  25. I came across an interesting disc yesterday:

    4th. Generation:
    Cure - Wish
    Electra/Fiction
    9 61309-2
    Matrix code: 2 61309-2 SRC*01 M1S1

When I first spotted the disc I didn't know what to make of it.

It didn't have the barcode in the inner mirror band so, at first, I thought it was a 3rd. Generation pressing. The 1992 release date printed on the tray card however, told me that it was released too late to be a 3rd. Generation pressing. Also, there wasn't a space between the M1S1 as is found on the 3rd. Gen. pressings (M1S1 rather than M1 S1). The disc itself had printed on the outer perimeter, "A TIME WARNER COMPANY." A little bit of researched turned up that the company was renamed Time Warner in early 1991 which helped to prove that this wasn't a 3rd. Gen. pressing.

So, it appears to be a 4th. Generation pressing without the barcode in the inner mirror band. As this is the first time I've come across a disc like this, I don't know if this is a common occurance or not with these 4th. Generation pressings.
