I'm confused by a CD I picked up recently -- but maybe I missed something or am confused...

I've got Foreigner - 4 here. It's the original mastering AFAIK, and according to the both the art and (more importantly) the printing on the CD, it's made in Germany. It seems to have made for the European market, also.

But it has an SRC matrix: 2 50796 SRC-02

So what's up with this? I thought all SRC discs were U.S.-made. Are there SRC discs made n Germany, or was this made in the U.S. and just has "Made in Germany" printed on it?

  5. Hi PlusMinus,

I have one or two discs like this too!

My understanding is that the Glass Masters were made by SRC and then sent to Germany for pressing. I would assume that SRC didn't have the capacity in the early days to press all the discs necessary to meet demand. Thus, it was necessary to have another plant do the actual pressing of these discs.

I find them to be yet another interesting aspect to the SRC story and the early days of cd pressing in the States!

Just how rare they are I don't really know, but, I don't come across them very often!

Another interesting part of this story is that, at least for the discs that I've seen, they were all pressed in Germany, not W. Germany. That means they would have been pressed after the reunification of Germany in October of 1990. I would have assumed that SRC would have needed the help pressing discs from their own glass masters in their early days when the plant was just getting started rather than at this late date.

The things that make you go !

Ah yes, now that you mention it, I guess I have read that previously. Thanks!

  7. Picked up another one:

    2nd. Generation:

La Bamba, Original Motion Picture soundtrack
    Slash/Warner Bros.
    Matrix code: 1 25605-2 SRC-01

  8. Hey! I got lucky and found another one diggin' around in the bins today:

    2nd. Generation:

    AC/DC - Who Made Who
    Atlantic
    Matrix code: 3 81650-2 SRC-01

The inside of the booklet had this interesting bit of information:

CD Mastering by Barry Diament, Atlantic Studios

question: is the point of this thread to post all our "SRC=01" discs? I must have a ton of those. What about other low "SRC" numbers?

  11. Yes and no. I think the real point is to learn as much about these pressings as possible.

By posting the SRC-01 pressings you have and, if you know it, the release date for that particular album, I'm hoping that we can pinpoint the exact release dates for each of the different generations of SRC pressings.

I have checked for the release dates of each of the SRC-01 pressings that everyone has posted so far. Sometimes I can find it....sometimes I can't.

Sometimes the available release dates make sense and sometimes they don't.

For example, The AC/DC disc I just listed has a commonly found release date of May 1986. However, this date doesn't fit in with the Second Generation release dates. Why.....? The only reason I can think of at this time is that the May '86 release date is for the lp not the cd, and that the cd was probably released later....sometime in 1987.

I think we're all just trying to learn as much about these discs as possible and right now, any information is better than no information.

So, if you have a ton of SRC-01 1st. and 2nd. Generation discs and SRC-01 M1S1 3rd. thru 6th. Generation discs please list them and let's see if we can learn something from them!

Could a reason be that the first release of a CD was not an SRC?

    ** EDIT **

by the way, what's the cutoff year you are looking for? No "SRC"s past what year?

    also, are you including promos?

    and singles?

  14. I would assume that this could be one of many reasons, yes.

The cutoff year would be the year that WEA took over the SRC manufacturing plant. My understanding is that this took place in 1996. However, the oldest release date that I have for an SRC pressing is late 1995. (If you haven't read my post on page 3 of this thread, you should take a look at it.)

Promos, singles, discs pressed for Columbia and other manufacturers, discs that were pressed in Germany but had the glass master made by SRC and anything else that has SRC included in the matrix code should all be included!

Hey hey. Unless I'm not understanding what you're saying correctly, couldn't this scenario just be that you don't own the first SRC pressing?:)

  17. Hi Surfin Jesus,

Thanks for posting those. What we're really after are just the SRC-01 and SRC-01 M1S1 pressings since these would signify the first pressings from the first Stamper made from the first Mother produced from the first glass Master.

    Your copy of:

Art Of Noise "(Who's Afraid Of?) The Art Of Noise!" ZTT/Island 1984
    3 90179-2 SRC-01

fits the bill nicely! As long as your sure there are no "M S " numbers included in the inner mirror band (They can be really difficult to see sometimes!) that would place your disc in the 2nd. Generation.

Huh? Warner Communications, Inc. bought Specialty Records Corp. in October 1978.

  19. Hi SecondHand,

This is a possibility....if a pressing of this disc is available without the Label Identifier in the matrix code. In other words a copy of this cd would have to exist with this as the matrix code:

    81650-2 SRC-01

    instead of this:

    3 81650-2 SRC-01

Until someone tells me that they have this disc with the first matrix code, I have to assume that the second matrix code is the first pressing of this disc by SRC.

So, that's just one more reason for other people to list their SRC pressings....so we can try to determine what the earliest matrix code is for a given release.

So how about it? Anybody out there got a copy of AC/DC "Who Made Who" pressed from the first glass master?

(Just to let you know SecondHand, I'm still searching for that Fleetwood Mac disc for you. All I've been finding lately are CRC pressings of it though.)

  20. I probably should have worded that differently. However, the Specialty Record Corp. initials appear on discs released from this manufacturer until approximately late 1995/1996. After that, the SRC initials disappear and WEA begins to show up in the inner mirror band.

You're right, they ARE hard to see. I double-checked, and now I see that Art Of Noise I posted is actually a M1S3

Yes, just wanted to point out that ownership didn't cause the change. WCI bought the name as well as the original plant. So they could use either "SRC" or "WEA" as they wanted.

OK, I'm totally confused here. So you only want 01s, NOT all SRCs?

  25. Yes! 01's from the First and Second Generations and 01 M1S1 from the Third through Sixth Generations.
