I vote for Chicago Transit Authority and Willie's Stardust as the two best sounding Gold Mastersound CDs.
*I also like Born to Run even though others here on the forum don't.

    FYI,

The Van Morrison Blowin' Your Mind on Mastersound Gold is the same mastering that is on the current remaster, both are done by Vic A. Buy whatever is cheaper.

Gee, I almost forgot about my little handful of Japan-import Mastersound Miles CDs... not gold, but they seemingly do get the SBM mastering treatment (if the Japanese liner notes are any indication)... my copy of KOB sounds amazing to me, but (also amazing) it's the only copy of KOB I've ever owned... I do remember that I got it prior to the publicized speed-correction issue ('96?), but I wonder if this Japanese issue is correct nonetheless.

Anyone else got this?... Sony Records SRCS 9104... mini-lp cover sleeve.

Just curious, but when you prefer the MasterSound gold CD of Silk Degrees to the MFSL disc, what is it that you prefer? I got the MFSL UDI of Silk Degrees recently and love it, but I have not compared it to the MasterSound gold disc. I've only compared it to the original CBS release (Japanese and U.S. pressings), and the MFSL disc is much better.

Hopefully this won't be considered a thread crap.

I owned the CBS Mastersound of "Wish You Were Here" sold it and recently acquired a French import? I'll have to double check this, but anyway it came in a mini lp sleeve with original artwork and post card insert. This is a great sounding cd, very smooth and does not at all sound bright or compressed. To my ears it sounds better than what I remember the gold disc sounding. This is an EMI release.

I am another that loves the way that the Chicago Transit Authority Mastersound Gold CD sounds.

Do people here not like the Mastersound Gold CD of Blood Sweat And Tears' Child Is Father To The Man?

I prefer it much to the older Columbia CD, but I have not heard the MFSL.

I hit 3 lemons in a row with the Mastersound gold CD's "Boston", "Blonde On Blonde" and "Face The Music."

Finally found a keeper with Willie Nelson's "Stardust". And I still say it's better than the SACD.

    Poor mastering perhaps?

The Willie Nelson "Stardust" & Santana S/T are 2 of my favorite Mastersound's .

Also have Billie Holliday "Lady In Satin", Carole King "Tapestry", Janis Joplin "Pearl" and they are all mediocre in my opinion. Would probably do just as good with the remaster's of those titles.

I haven't listened to my Gold "Child Is Father" CD in quite awhile, I'll have to crank it up again for a fresh listen. But I recall it sounded overly bright to my ears when I first bought it.

Van Morrison's "Blowin' Your Mind." It does just that! Great Mastersound CD.

I have the Mastersound Switched on Bach (Wendy Carlos), Santana 1st, Time Out which are all three excellent, and Blonde on Blonde which I don't like.

I don't know what to make of the remastered Switched on Bach. It sounds superb, yet I know that it's been futzed with...

    Kind of appropriate though.

I think I prefer the MFSL because it sounds "right". The Mastersound isn't bad, but it's a little "crisp"-- not really too bright, but too "crisp" if that makes sense. The MFSL sounds natural to my ears. Sometimes when my sinuses are starting to fill up... my hearing dulls just a bit and the Mastersound is OK then and the MFSL doesn't sound quite right. I hope that helps. Of course that is my personal preference...until Steve H. get's his turn at it.

Thanks for the comments. I may pick up the MasterSound disc just to hear it, but I love the MFSL disc.

    Thanks,
I don't have the Mastersound Gold version but the recent Deluxe Edition mastered by Vic A. sounds really good to these ears.

Among the CBS Mastersound Gold CD's that I have, I'm happy with the following titles in terms of sound:

    1) Dave Brubeck: Time Out
    2) Simon & Garfunkel: Bridge Over Trouble Water
    3) Santana
    4) Chicago Transit Authority
    5) ELO: Discovery
    6) Boz Scaggs: Silk Degrees

In the cases of Time Out and Kind of Blue, the Gold discs sound very good, but the remastered aluminum CD's sound way better, IMO.

I believe that I understand now why Steve prefers the Mastersound Pink Floyd WYWH Keith. The Mastersound does not have the crisp treble that the Japanese 1st pressing has and has a fuller bloom in the midrange and bottom end. My take is that to get the perfect sound for this album would be a combination of the Mastersound and the Japanese 1st pressing. The Japanese 1st pressing exhibits a more natural feel in it's presentation than the Mastersound, but lacks a bit in the bottom end while being a small amount sharp in its treble presentation.

No-one has mentioned Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell. I wasn't impressed by that one at all!
