Great album, but the "Wall of Sound" mix is bad.... every CD sounds lousy. This one needs a remix like Aqualung.

For once I actually have the "right" one of something. This was one of the first CDs I bought at the BX when stationed in Crete Greece from 84 to 86.

Can't be done Claus because the "wall of sound" is on the master tapes. This exactly why the vinyl pressings sound this way as well.

Three years ago, a friend brought the remastered BTR in to work for us to listen to and I did not want to insult him . . . but the sound was horrible even on mid-grade equipment (Marantz, JBL). I play the old original cd of this album all the time in my car and on my tube rig at home and I love the disc because that's the way it's supposed to sound.

People think they can "fix" the mix of this album by f***ing with the EQ, adding treble or whatnot. You can't. All that does is lose the natural quality of the vocals. Once that is gone, you've lost.

BTR, is certainly BS most pivotal album. it made him a true rock star.

Hmm...mine is a Canadian copy...but it has the big CBS lettering on the left side of the disc...CBS on the spine...the little triangle on the right...CK33795 (DIDP 050021) and Made in the USA along the bottom perimeter. (and no "now made in the USA" on the back.

Thought I read somewhere that any disc with a reference to DIDP 050021 was an identical master to the Japan one...could be wrong tho.

I know for a fact that I got this in about mid 1987 as I was in radio at the time and remember how this mix was exactly as Steve described...plus given the "early" vintage of this - I don't think they were cranking out a bunch of different remasters of this - that early in the CD game.

Can anyone provide EAC values of the "japan" pressing?

There's a very long thread from a few years ago that gives the EAC values for the various masterings of BTR.

    Thanks! Will look that up.

Also - some folks are saying the copy that reads "Now Made in The USA" is not the right one...yet I am looking at CD album art for BTR on Discogs that has the "Now made in USA" tray insert but at the bottom it says Record Manufactured in Japan By CBS....

So what was exactly "Now Made in The USA"...the inserts? The CD? The jewel case? Or all of it?

Might as well save you the trouble, especially since others will probably have the same question. Here's the EAC/matrix info from the earlier thread:

All have 35DP-21 in the matrix and should have pre-emphasis.

Mine meets all the criteria except the actual disc says MADE IN AUSTRIA - artwork says Made In Japan. Is it the real thing?

Phil Spector always said if they wanted to do BTR properly they should have come to him!

Oh it's always the vocals that suffer...once you get the tinkerbells nasty earbleeding shrill, and you're celebrating the digital noiselessness of it all, you can be sure half the vocal's gone bye-bye. It makes me crazy.

If the 35DP version is the one Steve has, I agree. One of my favorite CDs ever!

The second DADC pressed version is good also IMO.

Check your EAC results. That will tell you which mastering you have. Guessing, I'd say probably the 1st or 2nd.

So the one that has "Made In Japan" on the packaging but also "Now Made In The USA" was remastered? What year did that come out?

No one said the second mastering sucked. I've just only heard the first CBS, Japan version.

Start your CD. If it sounds like Bruce's voice is real, you've got a good one. If he sounds jacked up, ditch the disk and find an earlier mastering.
