Hello All, Please help me make a 1cdr compilation of the best of 'Black Sabbath The Tony Martin Years', similar to the Dio Years comp, the only songs from the Martin era I am familiar with is 'Headless Cross, When Death Calls and Valhalla' but I need more suggestions to make it about 76mins or so ? Cheers
How funny. I've been obsessed with Tony Martin Black Sabbath today (just getting into it) I'll come back tomorrow. I dont know the song names too well yet. But he's a great singer and Iommi has some great music with him.
Evil Eye I think may be another one ? So far: Headless Cross Valhalla When Death Calls (with Brian May) Evil Eye
I think Cross of Thorns, Back to Eden, and The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, all from Cross Purposes (1994) are all fantastic.
Psychophobia from Cross Purposes Rusty Angels from Forbidden The Sabbath Stones from Tyr The Shining from Eternal Idol
The Shining Glory Ride Born To Lose Eternal Idol Ancient Warrior Headless Cross Kill in the Spirit World Nightwing Valhalla Feels Good to Me I Witness Back to Eden Can’t Get Close Enough Loser Takes it All about 75 minutes
The Shining is a must ! honestly though, i couldn't pick songs for just a 1 cd "best of"....i'd just need the full albums as i quite like this era of the band and couldn't hand pick from each album. I'd still be over with 2 cd's worth probably. Just make "The Shining" for sure be on the cd you're making...i'd suggest making it #1....such a great intro !!
also check out the harder to find tracks: Cloak and Dagger What's The Use? Loser Gets It All all pretty cool tracks that should have all been on the regular versions of their albums!
The IRS Records The Sabbath Stones compilation encompassing the Tony Martin periods includes: 1. Headless Cross [Headless Cross] 2. When Death Calls [Headless Cross] 3. Devil & Daughter [Headless Cross] 4. The Sabbath Stones [Tyr] 5. The Battle Of Tyr [Tyr] 6. Odins Court [Tyr] 7. Valhalla [Tyr] 8. (Ronnie James Dio track) 9. Virtual Death [Cross Purposes] 10. Evil Eye [Cross Purposes] 11. Kiss Of Death [Forbidden] 12. Guilty As Hell [Forbidden] 13. Loser Gets It All [Forbidden] 14. (Ian Gillan track) 15. (Glenn Hughes track) 16. The Shining [Eternal Idol]
This CD isn't bad (although it really should have been called "The Best of the I.R.S. Years"). Black Sabbath - The Best Of Black Sabbath Nothing from Eternal Idol though, so not representative of all Tony Martin's work.
I have this one, it was my intro to the Martin era of Sabbath. When those albums were current I was knee deep in my all-thrash-metal, all-the-time phase, and Sabbath wasn't even on my radar. Years later, when I started discovering how cool those albums really were, they were all OOP and were going for stupid $$ on eBay ... so that compilation was the only game in town for a while. Haha
Great suggestions, I think I will use that Best Of Black Sabbath (2000) as the basis of the comp and add 'The Shining' but I still have 15 mins or so to fill so really stuck on what else, maybe 'The Loser Gets It All' because it is on 'The Sabbath Stones' ?? 1. The Shining (Eternal Idol) 2. Headless Cross (Headless Cross) 3. Guilty As Hell (Forbidden) 4. Virtual Death (Cross Purposes) 5. Evil Eye (Cross Purposes) 6. When Death Calls (Headless Cross) 7. The Battle Of Tyr (Tyr) 8. Odin's Court (Tyr) 9. Valhalla (Tyr) 10. The Sabbath Stones (Tyr) 11. Kiss Of Death (Forbidden) 12. Devil And Daughter (Headless Cross) 13. ???? - this should be a 'Eternal Idol' song 14. ???? - this should be a 'Forbidden' song 15. ???? - Any
A good starter Martin track list: Anno Mundi Back To Eden Kill In The Spirit World Born To Lose Cross of Thorns The Shining Forbidden The Sabbath Stones Headless Cross I Witness Jerusalem Cloak & Dagger When Death Calls Black Moon Cardinal Sin Eternal Idol
Eternal Idol Anno Mundi I Witness Cross of Thorns When Death Calls Immaculate Deception Cardinal Sin I think this suggestion would work only for people who don't really like the Tony Martin era anyway. The Eternal Idol is the "least Tony Martin" album of that era, since his only involvement in it was re-doing the vocals, imitating as closely as possible Ray Gillen's approach. Moreover, IMO it is a very weak album in terms of song-writing and production. The only two songs on it that I really like are Eternal Idol and The Shining. Everything else - mediocre. Even Forbidden has better songs.
An EP is enough.... 1. When Death Calls 2. Headless Cross 3. Valhalla 4. Eternal Idol By the way Forbidden is the worst Sabbath album. A nightmare!
Tyr is pretty great from start to finish, so I would hesitate to split it up given it's a concept record that works best as a whole. I love the Tony Martin era. All albums contain some excellent songs. Forbidden is probably the weakest taken as a whole, though I agree that the Eternal Idol album is a bit of anomaly since Martin was hired as a second gun so to speak to redo the vocals. He's a decent lyricist as well!
Even though we like the same bands it seems, this is one situation where you and I definitely disagree. It's all good, though.
Like that one too.......IMO reminds me of the Soundgarden or Pearl Jam aspect of their influence from Black Sabbath. My complaint would be that piccolo snare sound...... Not the kind of thing I engage in, but for Martin era Sabbath a really good idea to make a comp. I'd have to hear how it flows together, but it has the potential to be a really good album. At least a damn good collection of songs.....
This thread has given me the idea to go back and given the non-Ozzy years another go. At least having Martin as lead vocalist for five albums could make for some sort of cohesion.
