Thanks Scott, sorry you had to reiterate that for me, I see the information has been posted on here several times. I am just having a hard time locating one that has this criteria. Thank you.
I guess. The 10 track version is bit weak, but I still prefer it to the 90's remaster but not to Green or Orange Column discs also not to the Sony or new MFSL CD. The Japan for US 10 track is so rare that you probably won't find one, so nothing to worry about - although it was the first I purchased long before I have any idea it was different.
There's no target CD of any Billy Joel album - wrong label. There's a Japan for US version of GH V1/2, though...
Confirming....mine copy is on "CBS" - Japan for US - it runs 42:36 - matrix is 35DP-2 81A3. This is not the 35DP2 with pre-emphasis, correct? (The latest PE list for this title says "crude font matrix".) Could someone describe how the 42:49 version is better - why you like it more. (I've never been real crazy about the version I have.) Second question: Comparing "apples to apples", how does the redbook layer of the recent MoFi sound? And how does it compare to these? Thanks!
IIRC different playlists on some of the early issues of that compared to the US stock disc? I have a copy (the US Stock version) only because they sell for $1.99 in my area, I'm close to Joel's old stomping grounds so there is a glut of his CD's, anyhow I never listen to it... Nowadays with the exception of The Stranger and 52nd St I spin the MFSL's. For the Stranger I like both the Orange and Green Column masterings as well as the SONY SACD. At this point in time I have no longer have a preferred from those 3. P.S. I have never listened to the CD layers of the MFSL's hybrids so I can't be of any help there.
I picked up one of the Canadian versions at a thrift store today. WCK34987 on the spine. 1B CK34987 20 C3 on the disc hub. 35DP 2 Certainly has Pre Emphasis. I use an early Denon CD player with an Emphasis indicator light. It lights up. Also worth noting it doesn't detect in EAC. So the flag is in subcode.
I have another slight oddity to add, and though I wish it were, I do not believe it is just a rounding error difference between EAC and CUETools. My CK 34987 copy of "The Stranger" has the CBS/Sony, Tokyo, Japan references on artwork, no "Now Made In The U.S.A." addendum, but it is a New Jersey made CMU Pitman disc, as evidenced on the inner ring. The matrix is 1B CK34987 06. The disc has nine tracks (total time 42:33) and no pre-emphasis flags, neither TOC nor subcode. It looks to be the reported Denon mastering on the Japan for US and US for US discs (blue columns in the chart). That said, tracks 1 and 5 have peak levels 0.1 percent greater than and 0.01 dB greater than otherwise reported. Found this version today, too! Doesn’t look like it’s in Discogs at this point. Case also says Tokyo, but disc doesn’t specify. Could it be a Japanese pressing for the American market? The hub stamp on this, however, says p37.
No, absolutely not from Japan. That is a CMU Pitman pressing from the late 1980s or early 1990s. On a related note, if I had a nickel for every time an eBay seller ignorantly or fraudulently has tried to pass off a US disc as a Japan pressing. Sellers will seize upon one tiny, out of date reference to Japan on the back inlay -- and manifestly will ignore that same back inlay declares Now Made In The U.S.A. in big bold letters or that the disc itself states Made in U.S.A. Some people are just stupid or dishonest. AJ
'P37' on the hub gives it away as a CMU. Lazy carry over art from the Japan for US manufacture. My later US DADC doesn't have the blurb either.
Huge thanks for the activating this thread to @Ken_McAlinden Hi Folks, I notice the full chart is missing. Will be repost-ing them soon.
New to Billy. Just picked up the 1990 "The Stranger" cd and I also have the 1998 remaster. Is there a cd version out there that does not have the audio "glitch"/static sound at about :46 and :50 secs into "Movin' Out"?
I came across one more small mystery regarding the early masterings of The Stranger. It was established above in the early posts that the Made in Austria disc with matrix "DIDP-050002 12A2" (Total time = 42:49) is the "green" mastering in Rick's charts. In the bins and online I have also found a 9-track Made in Austria disc with matrix "DIDP-050002 09". Does anyone have this disc and can possibly post peak levels or the disc's total time? Would like to know if it's the same, or not. Thanks! Steve
The version in the 30th anniversary legacy edition (reused in the complete albums collection box) doesn't have the glitches you reference. BUT, it is also compressed and loud.
Ended up stopping at a local thrift store and spotted a Japan for US CK 34987, so I had to grab it. I knew something must've been up when it only verified with an accuracy of 2 in dBPoweramp, and it turns out I have the rare 10 track version! Sounds pretty good on its own, but I'll be on the lookout for a more common green mastering to compare it to.
I picked up a copy of the Stranger yesterday that turns out to be the 9-track blue mastering. I thought it was the "original" CD, which I read sounds good. This blue mastering sounds to me anemic and robs the album of its energy.
