yesstiles is correct the Genesis catalogue was remastered and remixed in 2007 on the double SACD releases. The same remasters/remixes were released on normal single CD in 2007/2008. The front of these CD’s says either 2007 or 2008 Digital Remaster And Stereo Mix as can be seen on this image from Amazon. Amazon.co.uk
Remixed by Nick Davis and Remastered by Tony Cousins IIRC. But the damage was mostly done in the mixing stage, something Tony couldn’t amend.
I like the mix of the 2007 Trespass CD, just don’t like the mastering. I have 2007 Seconds Out remix on vinyl and it actually sounds really really good. Great mix and master on that.
One last time then I'll give up. Mastering and remastering are not synonyms. You can't remaster something that hasn't been mastered once before. Davis REMIXED the albums in surround and stereo. Those masters were MASTERED (without the RE) for SACD and CD and LP. None the CDs or SACDs included any remastering of the previous mix, just a mastering of the new remixes (and the surround mixes). The CD artwork was just marketing nonsense. It's almost 20 years these editions came out. There should even be any debate. The first and last time the albums were officially remastered was with the Definitive Edition. Abacab was remastered as an Atlantic Gold CD. New remasters are coming out with Atlantic for some titles. That's it.
Agreed. Off the top of my head, the 2000 Lennon reissues also said "remixed & remastered" but one has to take those lines as the label using marketing buzzwords they know people will generally associate with "new and better!" You can't remaster what hasn't been mastered before, but it's just that "remastered" sounds good from a marketing standpoint. If it's a brand new mix you can't call it a remaster, though I guess to many people "remastered" must mean "restored" or something. As for the label, who cares what words actually mean as long as they sound right, right? Even on this forum the words mix and master (and indeed remix and remaster) are often used interchangeably by many. Oh well.
I just grabbed a near mint copy of the VJCP: VJCP-68096•97, Virgin/Charisma/Toshiba (mini-LP packaging) Still can't find much info on it in any of these Genesis CD versions threads. But a couple people seem to like how it sounds. Cool packaging.
Nope. That was not remastered. DEs end with Abacab. The mini-lps were just repackaged the same way. It's still the old UK/EU mastering, maybe with some minor adjustments and possible (unaudible) digital glitches.
Listening now. Bought on a recommendation here some time ago. Sounds pretty decent. Genesis – ... And Then There Were Three ... Charisma – VJD-28089
