I'd say there's a decent chance this strange release is a trial balloon.

Not in an original picture sleeve you won't, some of them are twice that.

I'm thinking the release date is suppose to be 9/9/11 or maybe 9/11/11.

    Guess, I'm spending some money.

Why didn't they just make a tee-shirt with the original single picture sleeve ? I could use a Hello,Goodbye shirt.

None in Latham, NY. Are these supposed to be put out with "1" on the 13th and some stores put them out early, maybe?

The more I think about it, the more that I'm convinced that this is test marketing. Look at the selections:

Can't Buy Me Love - The rarest picture sleeve
Help! - The mono mix, currently only available in expensive Beatles In Mono box
Hello Goodbye - B-side contains currently unavailable edit
Let It Be - Both sides currently available on Past Masters. Why would you want this?

So, what do Beatles' fans care about? Do they want rare picture sleeves, mono singles, rarities, or will they just buy anything?

They package existing t-shirts with beautifully recreated 45s and charge $20 knowing that no casual fans it going to buy these things. They tally up the daily and/or weekly sales to determine what sold the fastest. Then, they can help plan their next release, whatever that is.

Or, they can toss the data out the window.

Either way, there is a reason that they it this way.

    -------------------------------

Now, if it were up to me, they would be doing an American singles collection. We could have a complete vinyl 45 picture sleeve box set and a 3 CD set of all American a- and b-sides with their original mixes.

Of course, they probably won't do that.

Definitely falls under the "people that will buy anything" category. If they were really test-marketing for future vinyl releases, they wouldn't be selling them bundled with t-shirts at Target.

FWIW, I don't believe any of the Beatles Capitol singles from the 60s were pressed on styrene. All of the ones I've seen are on vinyl.

In fact, I think Capitol didn't use styrene at all for their singles in the 60s. At least I've never seen a Capitol styrene 45. Whereas other labels, like Columbia, used styrene for most of their commercially released 45s (though promo copies were sometimes vinyl).

H-o-o-o-ld on there! Capitol pressed their records EXCLUSIVELY in vinyl and NOT styrene until maybe the 80's? After they started closing down their record pressing plants, some styrene 45's began appearing. ALL Capitol 45's with the anti-slip ring are vinyl and were pressed by Capitol. The styrene 45's were probably pressed by Columbia's Terra Haute, IN plant. Even Monarch Records in L.A. stopped pressing in styrene into the 80's.

You are correct, but Capitol farmed out the pressing in the 80's and only used styrene then. The Columbia vinyl 45's were pressed at their plant in Santa Maria, CA, which closed in the early 80's. Most of the Columbia promo 45's were styrene and came out of the Terra Haute, IN plant.

How do you tell if a record was pressed in styrene or vinyl?
