Anyone notice the cheap black-triangle Abbey Road CDs on eBay recently?

Well, the counterfeit Abbey Road CDs are selling, but interestingly, few people are jumping at the Buy It Now prices. I've noticed that the counterfeit Living Eyes discs are not selling. I guess people are onto them since the discs have a clear plastic ring.

The sad thing when you review the negative feedback is how long this has been going on. iluvkaykay has negative feedback associated with bootlegs going back to February. It's amazing that eBay allows this to continue.

We don't have a close up for me to illustrate what I'm about to describe, but the biggest giveaway about the fake disc is that the left edge of the "black triangle" overlay that they've used acutally intrudes into the (overly large) data ring area of the CD blank, creating an uneven data ring margin on one side, where the "hole" portion of the black triangle design is...

Sounds complex, but look at the earlier pictures, and you'll see what I mean. It's a dead giveaway.

Well I received my black triangle Abbey Road CD today. I have a few other black triangle CDs and they all look pretty much the same. However, the Abbey Road CD looks like a copy a fake to me. The big giveaway is the mirror band area where the matrix code is located. It looks pretty cheesy.

I was wondering if some of you who have the actual Abbey Road black triangle would be kind of enough to do me a favor and do a couple things for me.

    1. Can you e-mail me some scans of your CD, the outer cover of the booklet and the rear insert?

    2. Run EAC on all the tracks and provide me with your results. I ran it against my US pressing of Abbey Road and the results do differ.

Please PM me if you are willing to do this and I will forward you my e-mail address to send the scans and EAC results.

    Thanks in advance!
    Jorge

Jorge my friend I do have have the real-deal, but a severe lack of time, a scanner that requires me to reinstall it and I don't know how to email WAV files. If no one is able to help you I will when I return from holidays.

By way of a public service, two pics are coming!!!

First one - the CD label. Notice how the triangle design does not encroach into the (narrow) data ring.

...And the backing card (still inside the jewel case).

    Hope these help!

The authentic black triangle Abbey Road uses pre-emphasis, doesn't it? Does EAC tell you if the pre-emphasis flag is enabled or not? I know it's supposed to but I don't have any CDs that would test it. If you extracted a track and played it back on your PC and it was really bright then you'd know that at least it too was encoded with pre-emphasis. Hopefully you have a copy of the real thing. It'd be nice to compare it with some clips of the real deal though.

Jorge, if you can post scans of yours like Kevin (Joel Cairo) did we can put this one to bed. If it is just a rip/burn of the original with the emphesis on it won't be quite as good as the real thing. This doesn't mean it will be bad.

Mine is a duplicate of Kevin's.

Kevin is yours actually not as gray, but more silver in color as it shows up here and is the back artwork not as bright like mine appears in normal house lighting, or is it just my monitor?

I have a number of CDs that are supposed to be encoded with pre-emphasis, including the black-triangle Abbey Road disc, and EAC has indicated that none of them are so encoded.

I'm still betting that eBay won't do anything. The way I see these guys being shut down is for buyers to report them to the police. Numerous arrests have been made for counterfeiters of other merchandise (baseball cards, autographs, money, clothing and accessories, etc.). These CD/DVD counterfeiters just need to be reported.

Maybe they need to be reported to the R.I.A.A. instead of Ebay. I mean, some people actually put in the auction descriptions that they are selling copies and not originals, and Ebay does nothing. :realmad:
I'm sure it has to be a lot easier to track down these thieves on Ebay than it is to go hunting for the IP addresses of MP3 swappers.

I think that if they say it's a copy then at least it's 'caveat emptor'. Someone selling a copy as a 'copy' is just as guilty of copyright infringement as someone selling a copy and passing it off as the real deal, but it doesn't bother me quite as much. I feel if someone wants to pay $50 or $100 for a CDR copy then that's their problem. It is baffling that these guys can get away with selling truckloads of these fakes though, laughing all the way to the bank. :realmad:

Yeah, same thing with both my Abbey Road and Dark Side CD's. Never understood that pre-emphesis stuff.

Pete, the only way is to cancel your credit card payment or ask for a reimbursement from your credit card co. assuming of course that you paid by credit card through Paypal, otherwise there's literally nothing you can do because obviously eBay won't help at all.

I'll bet the guy has private auctions so no one will be able to warn one of the bidders that they're bidding on a fake! :realmad:

How does it compare to the pictures in this message thread? Is the CD 'label' shiny and is there an even circle in the middle ring?
