3.6GB file, lol. Anybody have the MD5s for the tracks?

Curious if Steve Hoffman heard any of the download and could offer a neutral, but "Professional" comment on the recent slate of downloaded music (Band On The Run, and now ATMP) that is starting to enter our listening more each day.

Thanks for these instructions. I was just going to ask about that. I think I'll give this a shot to hear what it sounds like in full resolution, but I'd also like to burn a redbook CD version (16 bit) because my 2 channel rig is better than my HT but obviously won't play a DVD-V.

I think forum member Stateless mentioned simply dropping the tracks into iTunes and this converted them down to 16 bit (lossless?) suitable for burning onto a redbook CD-R. I'm wondering if there is a newer version of iTunes than I have. I ask this because I have been importing WAV files into iTunes for several years and each time it seems to automatically convert the files into mP3 files (not 16 bit lossless files).

I also have dmbPoweramp and one other format conversion tool which I use to convert from SHN and WAV files to FLAC files, but I'm not sure if they will convert from 24 bit to 16 bit so I thought I'd check here to find out the best way to do this.

Listening now, it seems to be pretty good for what its supposed to be. This isn't supposed to be a sweetened release, but a rather straight transfer. The naturalness of the reverb is nice, and some of the tracks really sound great. It is still a harsh record, but on tracks where less goes on it sounds really nice. Still looking for MD5 numbers for comparison, if anybody wants to check theirs please pm or post.

Way too much high end going on, 5-7k is 3db too much. If you lower that a little bit the harshness is tamed quite a bit. The standout attribute of the release is the dynamics, art of dying shows this off particularly well. Those drums! Overall a nice release, but definitely not amazing sounding. This is one that always needed taming, and this sort of release leaves it a bit unflattering. Still nice, and I'd still like to compare MD5s to somebody else with the 24/96 to make sure the files are perfect.

Hmm...that never happened to me. I have iTunes 10 I think. I just dragged & dropped them. The files stay hi-res, but burning the CD supposedly automatcally converts the files on the disc to 16 bit. The actual dropped files still stay the same.

Go into iTunes Preferences>General Tab and look for the Import Settings link about 3/4 of the way down on the page. Open that link and under Import Using what does it say? My guess is it doesn't say Apple Lossless or AIFF. You may have your default set for mp3.

This is correct, very simple using iTunes. You can't go wrong. Play 24/96 in iTunes, or make a playlist and burn to disc, which will covert to 16 bit on the fly. Then, change import settings to whatever bit rate you like for converting and transferring to your iPod. All in iTunes!

So simple. I dragged and dropped the download folder into an iTunes playlist, converted to Apple Lossless, played through the Squeezebox Touch, then burned a dvd-r for portability. Good to go. Don't understand some of the hassle people have had here

I don't think that would make a difference unless you were ripping a CD...I could be wrong though.

ATMP downloaded in 55 minutes on Saturday without a hitch. I made a few copies for backup. Dropped it into iTunes for a burn which really surprised me overall. Then did the three some of Foobar/Lplex/Imageburn and got a DVD.

This is the clearest version of this LP/CD I have ever heard. I still own a mint original US LP, a Japanese CD and The retched re-master of 2001. This wins hands down. Now do I really want or need another LP version I ordered from the UK. What's the point, I'm trying to tell myself cancel that order. Oh Well. Thanks to :righton: DanFromIndy for the great steps on the DVD.

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

My buddy is quite annoyed that it isn't coming out on CD. He's not a technophobe, but really isn't interested in messing with hi-rez files, especially for $30. So, i'm creating a redbook version for him. Hey! The record labels can't get mad. They chose not to issue a CD.

The 24/96 version sounds excellent, I don't have any copies on vinyl but the high res sounds much better than the CP28 CD on my system. I am not hearing any upper midrange emphasis, it sounds very balanced.

Just got this downloaded, and am listening to it via AyreWave from the headphone jack of my MacBook running into an old NAD 3020 amp at work. Probably not the ideal audiophile setup, but the drums on "What Is Life" - Oh My God. "Awaiting on You All" still sounds like a wall of sludge, which tells me that this is an accurate transfer of the master tapes, lol. But the acoustic guitars on the softer numbers, wow. I have never invested in SACD or DVD-A, so I have never heard digital like this before. This 24/96 download thing is probably going to change the way I listen to music forever.

OK, all I have to say is bring on the 24/96 40th Anniversary Edition of Living in the Material World.

And I would buy the Beatles' catalog again if it came out in this format. :hide:

I think somebody already said this, but when the drums kick in on "My Sweet Lord" - Jesus Christ.

I'm going to shut up now.

If I'm not mistaken, those files are 24/44.1, not 24/96.

Rather wonderful, isn't it? And this is just what the additional dynamics of an uncompressed/limited recording did (via a dithered and downsampled CD), in the humble listening environment of my car this morning - there's a massive lift in the spirit of the tune when that key change and the drums kick in (and what felt like a few extra dB's too!), that the 2001 edition just stomped all over.

I can't wait until I listen to the actual 24/96 on DVD later... :)

  23. The 24 bit is the important part. THAT's hi-res!

Exactly! People keep focusing on the sampling rate that only doubles (96k) or quadruples (192k) the poential values and all of them above the threshold of human hearing whereas 24-bit (being exponential, 2 to the 24th power instead of the 16th) gives 256X the poential values at every frequency.

Not that I think the Beatles remasters are excessively limited by any means but if I was to fork out for them again I would prefer 24/96 unlimited files. Band on the Run and ATMP are terrific listening experiences.
